Hanging out in Sacramento!

Re: Kru

A seat for one at the bar on a weeknight is probably doable w/o a reservation. Their fish is well presented and consistently delicious, but you’re not going to get the same sort of thing as you might get at a high-end omakase place in SF, LA, or NYC. As a night out, it’s a nice treat for me and the partner. It’s $$$, but some of that price is for what I have always found to be excellent service and ambiance.

The partner particularly likes their house Old Fashioned.

Ju Hachi in midtown offers fish of (imho) similar quality at slightly better prices, but is a much more casual affair, and service can be… let’s call it ‘unhurried’. If, however, you’re the type to buy your itame shots of sake, you will DEFINITELY be paid a lot of attention.

I’m fairly certain all the good-to-very-good sushi places in Sac source their fish through the same wholesaler, Sunh Fish. This is where you go if you’re doing your own sushi at home, or if you want live local Dungeness.

This is why Ella is so disappointing.

Edible flowers? Really? In 2024?

Makes you feel like it’s 1984 (and not 2024), and you should still be rocking your Members Only jacket and Z Cavaricci pants.

Not really; in fact right now I’m back in Vacaville for the long weekend. Last week I came back here each night, but I spent the last five nights in Sacramento. I’m going to try Waterboy. Quite walkable!Either we’ve been, or it’s on our list.

Sunh Fish. This is where you go if you’re doing your own sushi at home,

@Lectroid I will definitely try that!

You all have been great!

If the gnocchi is on the offing, get it.

Also, if you’re a fan of Mahan’s cooking, try One Speed Pizza (which he also owns/operates), which makes a pretty good burger of all things (housemade brioche bun FTW!)

The only reason I’m not still rocking my MO jacket is that the two halves of the zipper have mysteriously gotten further apart.

I prefer Masullo for Pizza to One Speed, but it takes you a bit south. I just prefer Neopolitain style. It is not far from Sunh fish. There is also Oto’s, the japanese market, who is the other wholesaler to restaurants. They also offer true Kobe and wagyu. That is quite a bit further south, but where you can also pick up the other supplies for sushi. Or you can just buy it (or order it ahead) from Ray, their in house sushi chef.

Hop Garden also does a very respectable neopolitan/wood fired pizza. The partner appreciates the beer selection

Should you have the time and be so inclined, this is a rather trippy read:

I walked a mile back to the Juno’s sandwich place, without calling first, and it was closed.:disappointed: . So I walked another mile to Roxie.

Six miles total. :walking_man:t5:

Meatloaf sandwich with everything!

Too tired to take more than a bite, which was good!

Today I went to “Bawk”.

I ordered the fried chicken sandwich to eat there, and a club sandwich to go. I appreciated the choice of chicken thigh on the sandwich, and that the server informed me there were sides with both.

I chose “fries” to eat in, and slaw to go

On my way out I saw someone having the fried chicken, which I hadn’t noticed on the menu.

Hmmm.

So far, so good.

Thanks for the report.

Always wondered about this place, but I always felt I was never hip enough to actually go.

Beef larb from Thai Basil

Peach and cherry pie from Rick’s Desserts!

And a browned butter oatmeal cookie, almond cake, and a salted caramel cupcake from Ginger Elizabeth

I couldn’t decide!

Never have been to Roxy nor Bawk – there are so many friend chicken sando places now… but speaking of fried chicken, I think the former chef/owner at South now runs out of Jim Denny’s. Total throwback location, but Fridays the fried chicken is the special of the day. The chicken at South used to be very good.

If you like pie, also try the Real Pie company, just outside of the midtown core. A proper pie crust best shown off during fresh fruit season.

Oh yes! I remember South!

I’ve been wanting to track down some N’Gina Guyton.

Now I realize that was the same place mentioned here

Yes, I forgot it was mentioned earlier. Yes, and it seems from that post that the food quality depends on if she is there. She was trying to open another restaurant but I have not heard much since last year. She went through a rather messy divorce, it seems, including squabbles over the restaurant they shared.

The Refuge for a pastrami burger in San Carlos after a visit to Filoli!!

Juuuust a little outside” (of Sacto. “Major League” reference).

Just okay. The burgers are well done :rage:, and I can’t say the pastrami was better than mine.
