I generally don’t want to spend more than $50 for a steak. I’m seeing restaurants charging $80 or more for a striploin (Alobar Downtown, for example) and I can’t justify that expense.

We don’t have a real upper limit for a given type of dish. We do get irritated when the cost of the dish or the meal does not seem commensurate with its value and typically don’t order that dish again or return to that restaurant.

I was keeping an eye on Steak Frites on Harbord St, Dundas W, Queen W, College St and Ossington bistros.

I don’t really want to spend more than $60 on Steak Frites at a bistro, and I’d prefer to spend less than $50. Quite a few are closer to $60. Understandably, I guess , with the economy.

I haven’t been to a steakhouse in ages. I ordered take-out from The Keg maybe twice in 2021-2022.

I’ve been purchasing steak at Sanagan’s or Grace Meat Market and make it at home (More convenient for me than Cumbrae’s or Olliffe or elsewhere. )I’ve become a regular at Sanagan’s.

I thought the general spirit of a steak frites was to use a somewhat cheaper cut to make it a reasonably priced dish. $60 would seem to go against this idea.

During the past couple of months, I experienced gorgeously ’ Charcoal ’ grilled steak frites, using good quality cuts of meat at the following:

  • " Fish & Loaf " … Australian Grass fed Striploin 12-14 oz for $48
  • " Fish $ Loaf " … Australian Grass fed Rib-Eye 12-14 oz for $58
  • " 389 Cozy Restaurant " … Canadian AAA Striploin 10oz for $38
  • " 389 Cozy Restaurant " … Canadian AAA Ribeye 12 oz for $42

Surprisingly, Enoteca Sociale’s brunch is the same price as many lesser brunches. The Uova Benedetto (without potatoes, but with a parsley fennel camper salad) are $20 for 2 eggs Benedict.

La Signora (Mortadella Croque Madame) was around $19.

Martozzo /cream puff $7

Coffee $4

The food was great and I love their side patio.

Good Behaviour’s Holiday Specials.

In terms of Bang for the Buck, I think Vietnamese might be my best value meal right now.

After years of ordering bun, I’ve gravitated to broken rice. Chicken and rice, or a porkchop and rice, for $15-$18.

My current favourite for a hole in the wall is Pho Linh.

I am happy that Rùa Vàng is available on DoorDash (I pick it up) and very quick

In other bang for the buck news,

Christina’s on the Danforth currently has a happy hour / early bird souvlaki dinner for $20. I have not tried it, and I don’t know the times it’s offered. Probably from 4 pm to 6 pm.

Just went again to our local Dumpling House on Gerrard. The steamed pork and dill dumplings, chicken dumplings, pork soup dumplings, scrambled eggs and tomato, and noodles with Peking sauce were all yummy. Total cost including tip was $80.

Indeed, the value of some hole-in-the-wall casual Chinese places are really hard to beat! Quality is pretty darn good as well!
With the waiving of the 13% HST, the final bill is even more amazing!

My last bang for the buck meals in Toronto were that delicious breakfast sandwich at Dough Bakeshop on the Danforth, which cost $11.30 before tax, and broken rice platter from Golden Turtle on Ossington which cost around $18.

" Yumi Legend, Golden Court Plaza, Hwy7, Richmond Hill " - A rarity in ritzy Richmond Hill!

If your priority for a casual meal is quantity and value over quality, then, this obscurely located neighbourhood wok-hay specialist is definitely for you!

Overflowing in the beginning and still overflowing after I consumed enough of the content until full, this plate of acceptable standard ’ Stirred fry rice noodle ho-fun with sliced beef and black bean sauce ’ must be the BIGGEST plate of single dish luncheon meal I have ever encountered here in town!

In this day and age and in quasi-opulent Richmond Hill, a meal for only $10, inclusive of a complimentary cup of Hong Kong milk tea, tax and tips is definitely unheard of…Absolutely speechless!!
