Good Hong Kong eats 2024-25

Yeah I don’t know - not the Macau one though as I think it’s similar to the Portuguese one which I know well. The one from Lucas Sin at Gold Garden sounds nice what with the lard in the dough.

Wanchai- Honolulu. They always seem to have warm ones out of the oven.

The sourdough ones from Bakehouse were a house favorite.

Sigh… you still haven’t answered the eternal question posed by Fuschia. PIE CRUST OR FLAKY PASTRY SHELL? People generally prefer one or the other, and not both.

Yes, I meant that I still need to determine which of the two types I prefer…

May I ask the following: if any of you here could please suggest 1 place for each of the 2 types, then I’ll try them all out. And at the end of the week my preference will be determined and shared here.

Just go to any bakery that seems semi busy at an earlier time and you should be able to easily procure both.

For sure.

Flaky pastry has always been my vote ever since I arrived in HK almost 30 years ago. I do lament that Honolulu no longer sells egg tarts with more than 100 layers of puff pastry… probably a combination of old masters retiring and that it’s no longer economical to produce something that labor-intensive. Honolulu’s egg tarts are still good, though, although I’d do takeaways now since their Wanchai restaurant smells like sewage so I refuse to sit down.

In Cheung Sha Wan. Combine with SSP and Tai Kok Tsui.

Too bad that they changed their puff pastry.

Not sure I was counting correctly but I thought I counted 256 layers… but these days I know I can’t distinguish the layers like I could 20 years ago, and the pastry crust isn’t as pretty as before.

With the caveat that I’m decidedly not a fan of HK cha chaan teng, but do enjoy whatever the yum cha parlours throw at me, might any of you have recommendations for spots in the New Territories?

Figure, anywhere from Lantau to wherever, of course excluding Kowloon/HK Island.

Just found out that Kamcentre Roast Goose have a pop up at the Rosewood Hotel for two days only next week. Worthy of a reservation?

Kamcentre is always a good idea if there is First Cut Charsiu on offer.

Kam is at Basehall / Jardine center which has plenty of comfortable seating for your parents, so I’m not sure you need to spend one of your “fancy” meals on them unless there’s something specific ont he menu you are interested in. (The fatty char siu was available at Basehall when I went.)

Question: as this is a new thread, shall we copy the routine from the NYC good eats thread and post food pics here? Or make separate threads per trip?

A post was split to a new topic: [Hong Kong] Xin Rong Ji

My 2c is to start a separate thread for your trip report, and link back to this one.

(Fyi the nyc thread you referenced I had started for locals to report meals they may not otherwise start a whole thread for, to encourage local conversation.)

Yes, let’s do that. I’ll make the suggestion. Thanks.

@moderator-team Accidentally removed the post. Anyway to get it back? And then replace it to a new thread?
