GOOD EATS NYC 2024 (A Blanket Thread)

Mrs, V seems like she would find a fitting response to this kind of naughtiness.

Here’s a link to a new thread I just started. HO Dinner 9/12/24 at El Rey Del Pescado. If interested, please respond on that thread and preserve this thread for discussions about Uzbek dinners (both here and abroad), cats fondly remembered, pigs’ ears sandwiches, and good tuna poke. :innocent:

I suppose I knew it wasn’t destined to be when my gf ordered a hamburger, reaching for something familiar when there were so many interesting options on the menu.

took miss v to minar for rava masala dosa on our second date. She loved the food but complained about water pitchers sticking to the table. I didnt take it as a good sign but in the end, sharing Italian/polish food backgrounds helped quite a bit.

And of course by now, she’d never, ever fall for the “this is delicious, try a bite” trick.

Excellent meal at Olle, a Jeju inspired concept Korean on 30th (5th). The specialty is Galbi Jjim - Braised short ribs with oyster mushrooms and more that continues to cook on the table. Wish there were more mushrooms but beef flavor was spot on. Its $80 for 2 (there’s also a mini $70 version), and it comes with a Banchan set of 8, all excellent especially the Kimchi, 2 large sides of your choice for $10 more. One of which is Bibim Naengmyeon, cold noodles with spicy sauce. People rave about this, but I found the sauce too sharp for the delicate noodles and quickly got bored with it. The other side was a fried rice dish that they do late in the meal with the leftover Galbi Jjim pot and that was great, but comes with some confusion on how long we were supposed to wait for it to be fully cooked, and have decent amount of Socarrat.

We also tried the Skate with Soy-Garlic sauce which was really good. And Pork bone soup with potatoes, perilla leaves & seeds. Phenomenal tasting broth, but even though it came as advertised, frustratingly bony meat.
Out of the 4, Mrs Z was the only one who didnt care for the experience, but I suspect it was because she wasnt drinking. Final bill after tip $50 pp

I went in January of 2023, report here:

I had planned a dinner at Ananda with a friend who keeps kosher and didn’t want to eat inside. Unfortunately, Ananda has done away with its outdoor seating, so we pivoted to nearby Ras Plant Based for vegan Ethiopian and a table that was in an open doorway, so sort of not inside.

Very friendly staff, a surprisingly good drink despite its being called a Gin & Juice, and some pretty nice food. We shared two dishes: the Mercato, the spicier of two listed combo plates, and Ras Kitfo, with pea protein crumble, spice infused olive oil and mitmita. The items on the Mercato are Yatakilt (cabbage), Gomen (braised collards and onions), Missir (red lentil stews), Shiro (ground chickpeas) and Fasolia (string bean, carrots, caramelized onions).

Of the two dishes, I strongly preferred the Mercato, especially the cabbage, collards and lentils (could’ve done without the string beans altogether, as they were a little tough). The Ras Kitfo was fine, but a little went a long way 'cause it was kind of one-note.

I forgot how much I love injera. I think I ate about a pound of it.

I think I mentioned to some a very nice meal at Rana Fifteen (4th Ave at Union Street in Park Slope) https://www.ranafifteen.com/ last week - the three of us had the $45 special dinner, a whole table of mezze and apps, bread, 2 sides, 2 mains and dessert and it was ample and excellent, see earlier report by @Ziggy which had inspired me GOOD EATS NYC 2023 (A Blanket Thread) - #182 by Ziggy

The lamb ribs were particularly delicious, the branzino was ample in size and well cooked, but I would go with a meaty or veg main the next time, I think. We ate up every crumb of the food served.
first the apps, with a big accompanying salad

the items were thoughtfully portioned so each person got one piece of each
midye dolma, stuffed clams, fava (cubed), shrimp, borek

tarama, calamari, atom labneh, spiced fresh cheese, burst cherry tomatoes in a spicy tomato sauce, and super herbed eggplant fritters

All were thougtfully portioned for a group of three.

the mains - rosy lamb rib chops with apricots,

branzino roasted with a typical turkish spice mix (dried herbs, chiles and sumac I believe)

Several of the dishes, including the lamb included browned butter in the saucing, which just added a wonderful mellow flavor.
We agreed that this place was a gem and will be back! thanks to @ziggy for pointing it out, it just tok a while to respond!

Have there been any rumblings about a Tashkent Supermarket opening on 6th Ave. in Manhattan? I’ve seen a sign for it, but the sign dates back at least a couple of years.

THAT would be a boss addition to the neighborhood.

Any rumblings will have come from me, as Tashkent Market has continued to expand in Brooklyn while back-burnering Manhattan. No news in some time.

Thanks for the report. Their similar themed brunch is terrific as well.

Juicy burger alert. Steak Frites in Hell’s Kitchen. Dry aged blend, gruyère, dijonnaise, chopped bits of gherkins was a nice touch. Ordered medium. With burgers I usually dont notice much difference between med rare and med, but med rare might be more appropriate here. Nice flavor overall. Good crispy, thin fries.

Been so long since I ate any Ethiopian.

Looks like individual plates for eating with dishes served separately rather than on the usual shared platter?

Those are two share plates. I’m not sure how the rest of the menu comes to the table (gonna check Yelp photos right now).

We let our kids pick restaurants for their birthdays, my son chose buttermilk channel in Carroll Gardens because they all live in Brooklyn and he wanted fried chicken. As someone who grew up eating fried chicken in the south, I had low expectations but have a hands off approach to their choices.

I received a huge portion of expertly fried chicken, I’m sure the chicken is well-sourced but it was incredibly bland. We had some other stuff, the pickles were very good, the deviled eggs were fantastic, the popovers were ok.

My son sent a text this morning “ Thanks for the great dinner last night! I’ve decided that I don’t need to eat fried chicken anymore!“ which sums it up nicely except I’ve promised to take him to a place in the south that hopefully will change his mind.

On another note, we walked from the restaurant to borough hall along court st, Carrol gardens looks like the cool place to eat now, cobble hill is done except for a couple of places and it’s sad what’s become of the street when one crosses Atlantic into the heights.

Best,

Buttermilk Channel was the first place I ever had a sour beer, Finback’s “I Feel the Universe.” I don’t remember a single thing about the food, but that was a helluva beer!

Problem of the chicken or lack of marinade seasoning?

Lack of seasoning, the chicken meat was very nice.

aka turkish breakfast spread we are planning to give it a try.

I wrote this about Buttermilk Channel in response to a post about Claro last year:

“good but not great dinner I had recently at non-Michelin Buttermilk Channel which cost me all in$109 for a main, a salad a glass of their least expensive wine and half a dessert. Prices in Downtown Brooklyn are definitely up there.” Im not remembering all the stuff we had but it was VERY pricy for the portion sizes and quality of the food we had - except for the fried chicken that a friend had which was very large indeed. That must be their loss leader. At least you can add pepper and salt to a well fried juicy chicken piece! The restaurant is loud and crowded and very popular. I will not be back.
