Forum software update today (friday, 26th) at 9:30pm PT.

I was oddly just logged out. Other than the last upgrade, that’s the first time I’ve been logged out in years (I was lucky I found my password last month).

I’ve had this a couple of times - I actually got out of the post where I got an error message, fork-liked another post in a completely different thread, and then went back to the error post and was able to fork-like it.

I get this message periodically when trying to upload multiple photos. Doesn’t seem to happen when uploading a single file.

That would occasionally happen to me even before the update. I just upload again with no problems.

Another oddity today. I entered a post and received a message that I was logged out. (Again, never happened for years but happens every other day now). I tried to log in and received a message–I didn’t capture the exact verbage, but it essentially said I did not have access to this resource. After 3 or 4 tries I did get logged in and verified that my post had been saved.

Forum successfully migrated to a new, fast server and settings tweaked. But you will have to log back in again.

There shouldn’t be any ‘excessive load’ warning now. Now we can focus more on the other issues mentioned in the last week.

Was just coming here to ask about having to log in again, but you answered it. Thanks HO!

One observation - I’ve experienced some issues uploading multiple images at once - often one or more of the uploads will fail. I don’t remember this happening as often before the update. The Chrome console does show some 503s when this happens.

Edit: same as what @bbqboy posted Forum software update today (friday, 26th) at 9:30pm PT. - #67 by bbqboy

@Saregama We just removed a plugin that seemed to be causing the logout-reload-loggedbackin and maybe the topic post jumping around issue. @Mr_Happy See if the upload issue goes away too.

Thanks for looking into this - I’m still getting lots of 503s when uploading images though (more than one upload going at a time).

@hungryonion Jumping back up in a thread is still happening.

Also the photo loading issue persists (even when loading 2-3 pics).

I just got a 429 error when hitting the like icon. I tried again immediately, and it worked.

@Mr_Happy @Saregama We will have to either

  1. update the forum software in case there are any bugs in the current version
  2. disable and test each plugin / theme one by one

or both, to see if either actions fix the issue.

429 is rate limiting. Unless you have many HO pages open that really shouldn’t be happening. With that said, others have encountered 429 with the forum software in the past. Without getting into too much details, the fix will involve identifying the IPs coming through the web server and looking at whether the web server is incorrectly identifying an IP. We are just using the default forum software rate limiting settings so any fix will involve changing the default settings, which isn’t straight forward. I suggest that if the 429s aren’t excessive let’s just keep a passive eye on this one.

@Mr_Happy upload multiple file failing could be a software bug, since multiple people seem to be encountering it:

Right now, our setting is allowing 15 simultaneous uploads at the same time, which may be not a good idea. I am dialing it down to 5 for now.

Thanks for that. It seems to happen when uploading less than 5 photos at a time too just as a data point.

Also re: 429 - is this really the forum default? I get this quite often as well, even just opening up a few pages in different tabs.

I found this thread about a setting:

Maybe I just use HO too much.

In that case, I am reversing the setting back to 15 photos at a time.

That setting wasn’t present in our site config so we can test adding it in. I was more referring to whether the forum software are rate limiting the IP of any proxies (wrong) versus the end users (right).

What browser/ OS are you using to upload photos?

I just did a quick test. Uploading 5 at a time was trouble. 3 at a time twice no issue yet. Not that it means there is no problem with 3 at a time. But perhaps for the time being upload up to 3 or 4 at a time and see if it causes fewer issues.
