I am the new advisor for my high school’s baking club. I can bake well enough here on my own but getting a group of teenagers to do it is a new adventure for me. The life skills classroom is well-stocked with equipment which is a relief. There is money in the club’s account but I still don’t know how much.
Anyway on Monday we are having our 2nd meeting and 1st actual cooking adventure–caramel apples with various toppings (crushed oreos, sprinkles, mini marshmallows, mini m&ms, etc). We aren’t making caramel from scratch because that would take too long. I wanted to start out with something simple but I fear it may not be that simple. Oh well–live and learn. The students were really excited about actually being able to make stuff instead of just decorating cupcakes. I hope they have fun in any case.
I like the idea of sprinkles on the caramel apples. I yhink the kids will have fun and some new and easy ideas will come to mind as everyone gets into the groove.
Wow! 20 students RSVP’ed and 27 showed up. It is a good thing that I bought extra supplies. It was standing room only! It was a bit rough at the beginning but then we got into a groove and they had a lot of fun. I had to become the caramel nazi with the second half of the students because the first half didn’t do a great job of letting excess caramel drip back into the pots. I was afraid that we were going to run out but we had just enough. FUNFACT: unwrapping 6 bags of Werther’s chewy caramels takes 3 class periods. hahahaha
I think the next meeting will be decorating cupcakes as that will be easier and less expensive in ingredients. We’ll see what ideas the students come up with.
I was nervous all day but overall I think it was a great success.
That sounds like an awesome first time out!! Handy to know about unwrapping the caramels, perhaps you can dragoon some students into helping next time.
