Feuerzangenbowle

This thread reminded me of a very traditional German holiday punch, most often served for xmas or NYE.

It’s a bit of a PITA to make, as it requires a specific contraption to prepare what really is a glorified mulled wine punch.

The ritual of it all is what I think makes it appealing — at least to the older crowd, as this is a decidedly unhip beverage.

It involves lighting a sugar pyramid soaked in 54% rum atop the punch bowl, and letting the sugar caramelize and slowly melt into the bowl.

I’ve had the opportunity to try it once or twice, but never made it myself.

Have you had it?

yes. once with a family in the Frankfurt area - rural - Bauernhof . . . my kind of down to earth people.

later with upper crust/classmate/couple, most severely ‘more refined’ . . .

cute way to spend some time watching the flames . . .
the alcoholic results . . . . not so much . . . then again we’re not big drinkers.

I have the same reaction to wine - “I like / I don’t like”
stuff like “mulled wine” generally falls in the ‘why me?’ area . . .

Nope. My Mom told me never to play with matches … :fire:

But it looks like it could be fun to experience - assuming you live next to a fire station. I’m not so sure I’d like how it tastes, but I’d take one for the team!

Nope, but I’d try it. I need a bottle of 151.

Wiki informs that the ritual involves pouring more high-test rum over the huge sugar cube until the cube completely melts. I wonder if any of this extra rum makes it into the bowl…

Thanks for showing this.

Absolutely. It is recommended to have this once one is safely ensconced in cozy clothes at home, with no plans to go anywhere afterwards

Fire-proof, of course …

This I have. Because I live next to a college campus, the local store had a stash. Everclear, too …

The few times I’ve had Feuerzangenbowle, no hazardous situations were observed
