Fernandes Steakhouse 3, South Amboy NJ

Nice! Seared the way I like too…just a touch. Dollar for dollar not much touches that place.

After a meeting with a client I decided to swing by last night for a bite to eat. I haven’t been in a couple of months and since I’m going into the city tomorrow night for a steak dinner, I decided to go with my old stand bye, Paella Valencia. Note: they serve a whole lobster, not a half as many places do. They also had the 2 1lbs lobster special, I think for $ 24 -or- 1 1lbs lobster and steak, both specials included the salad bar. Also they had full/large sangria same price as half pitcher.

You really can’t beat this place, the best version of Paella Velencial I’ve ever had. Not shortage of chicken, pork, sausage, shrimp, clams, scallops (sea not bay), mussels, calamari. Delicious!

Well Jr got my mouth watering so I had to give in to temptation. I got there early, around 5. Upon walking in, I saw they had 40oz tomahawks on special (written on the specials chalk board in the foyer.) So that threw a monkey wrench in my plan. Originally I was trying to decide if I wanted a big lobster, the tile, or rodizio. So now I have 4 choices and you honestly can’t pick a loser out of these long proven dishes.

I decide to go big and just go all out on rodizio. What a war scene. I just annihilated this place. I decided to take a day off the diet. This was one of the best rodizio experiences I’ve had in a while. All the meat was fresh and it was coming at a pace that was comical. I literally had to tell them to stop after a few minutes with a full plate in front of me. The highlights were the ribeye, top sirloin and skirt. I had plenty of all of three. The Turkey and bacon along with the chicken wings were both top notch. The shrimp, sausage were also very good. Average items were chicken legs, pork with cheese, shish kebab. The miss of the night was the short rib…overcooked and not tender.

In order to gorge on my three favorite red meats, I passed on the ham, pork rib, spicy sausage, roast beef, corned beef, “cheesy beef,” fish (it is that farmed raised Asian catfish which I don’t eat but tastes ok,) and mozzarella (yes they have cheese cubes now.) Sadly, I ate so much that I had to pass on the pineapple. I love that charcoal roasted pineapple!

In summation, this places owns it. By getting there at 5 the meat was great and came out faster than you can imagine. Service was top notch and they gladly brought back certain meats we wanted more of.

Awesome!! So glad you enjoyed! I stopped ordering the rodizio simply because you can’t not over eat when you order it. So much is so good and as you said they just don’t stop coming! How much was the tomahawk do you know?

I didn’t ask. Once I saw the meat being passed around I just couldn’t resist. I had to go rodizio. I didn’t even open the main menu but glanced at the specials menu. The tomahawk wasn’t on there but a 40oz porter was.

My guess is the tomahawks just got in for the weekend so they are trying to move a few tonight.

I’m pretty uncomfortable right now lol. #couchtime

A few things for you Fernandes fans…

A) they seemed to have added the fish and mozzarella to the rodizio selection. However, are the wings new? I dont recall seeing them there. They were outstanding. They were perfectly crispy and had some seasoning that had a little heat to it.

B) the pepperoncini at the salad bar are gone (at least they were last night.) Jalapenos slices were present last night.

C) the traditional Portuguese fries were not served. Instead there is a plate of grated potato, kind of like the stuff you make potato pancakes with. Is that new too?

A.) Wings have been on for a while, mozzarella seems to be new. (even though I don’t get the rodizio my son and daughters bf still do)

B.) While the salad bar in general is kind of lame I do enjoy the grilled vegetables.

C.) By Portuguese fries are you talking about the chips? Honestly I don’t think I’ve ever paid attention to the sides that come wtih the entree’s the portions are so large who can eat the sides?

I was there for the rodizio on Oct 30 and the they had the mozzarella and fish but there were no wings. The fries were the usual (for Fernandes 3) thin matchstick fries with the onions.

Thanks for the info Jeff.

So I decided a back to back trip was a good idea. Why you ask…because fernandes kicks ass! If I go again tomorrow, someone please come bring me to rehab.

Ps, Jeff I didn’t see a single skewer of wings tonight

Bob, yes I was talking about the chips but I was mistaken. Apparently the “matchstick” fries are the regular fries.

I once went to Ninfa’s Navigation Blvd. in Houston, famous for popularizing fajitas and destructive Ninfaritas, two consecutive days with two different young ladies in the late 70’s.

Needless to say there was lots of food, ritas, and we@d involved. I lost my chips and salsa the second night but only after I fulfilled my obligation.

Fernandes looks epic, reminds me of some of the great places I’ve been.

That sounds like my kind of double header!

For those that dont know, that dish above is a tile with a sterno underneath. You get a 24oz ribeye and shrimp that cook in butter, garlic and lemon. I like my steak blazing hot so this dish really resonates with me. Here is a tip too. For extra healthy meat and shrimp, empty some of the bread butter packets onto the tile

You THE MAN!!! My favorite steak there!

Looks like almost a dozen shrimp on there!! I’ve never gotten that many!!

I was going to get a 3.5lb but my table for 2 was so crammed. I didn’t want to be splattering lobster juice all over these people smashed up against our table. As you know, those larger lobsters, with their thick shells, are often difficult to break into. This just means that it is next on my list and I’m going early next time.

And yes, I was impressed with the shrimp quantity.

Did you get to NYC?

Does the steak come raw and you cook at table or is this just for finishing/heating?

Yes Sir I did! Another great steak at Empire Steak House!! Bit too cold for a cigar on the rooftop after though but still a great meal.

I know because I am a stalker/food porn fan. Anytime I see something interesting on TV or this site I check out the Yelp photos and restaurant website, thus I know about the tile steak at Fernandes.

Nice! Do they have any brazilian places near you?

Metsfan, the steak is semi cooked, probably 90% done or so based on the temp you asked for.

They’re everywhere and have been since the 80’s. Houston is huge but you’re probably no more than 15-20 minutes from one.
