Fernandes Steakhouse 3, South Amboy NJ

Go back to sleep, no school today !!!

If you scrolled further you would see that our first HoDown there was in May 2017, the 2018 was the second. I’m ready for a 3rd when it is again possible.

I was in the mood for something “different” for dinner Saturday night and after a day at the beach I didn’t feel like cooking, so take out from Fernandes it was. Yes I should have taken pics and I’m truly sorry I didn’t but you really can’t imagine the mountain of food they give you for take out. We ordered two paella vallencia and one steak and chicken dish they had. There was 4 of us for dinner Saturday night and we had so much paella left over 3 of us ate it again last night and still had over a half a tray left over. Delicious as always and still pipping hot by the time the 30 minute ride home!

No special menu or prices but they are giving you one hell of a to-go serving size.

Last night at Fernandes in Newark.

And the main…Chilean sea bass over spinach…courtyard dining, stellar service, great chow, people so happy they were almost crying. Servers in masks, plenty of space between tables…get out there people (unless you consider yourself at risk).

Did they turn the entire parking lot into dining or just a portion? (If so where are they parking cars?)

We’re you in Newark or South Amboy?

(psssst look under the photo in the first post, it says Newark)

That’s what I thought…

They built a covered area by the entrance and opened up that weird foyer part you walk through to get inside. I was kind of hoping the whole parking area courtyard would be the dining area, but they did claim part of it as a waiting area with big wooden benches where you can sit and order drinks.

We had some excellent takeout from Fernandes Steakhouse in Newark. I got there before 5 and they already had a nice outdoor dining crowd. They set up some nice tents in the parking lot plus they had their little indoor outdoor patio. There must have been at least 6 or 7 occupied tables. It was just too hot and humid to eat outdoors today. I enjoyed a beautifully charred 2 pound porterhouse steak among other things. Details and pictures are in the main WFD thread below.

Everything looks excellent, as I would expect it to from them! I really wish you had ordered the paella valencia, the size of the portion they give you to go is truly amazing. Easily enough to feed four people and each would be stuffed. Glad you enjoyed! (was this a HO find for you?)

Thanks @NotJrvedivici. I’ll have to try the paella at some point but I was in the mood for steak yesterday and they didn’t disappoint. I thought they only had a limited menu. When you click on the dinner link it brought up a bunch of specials and I didn’t notice paella. I don’t know if they also had the regular menu as well.
Yes, this was a HO find. Thank you! I like the fact that they have their own parking lot. The ride isn’t too bad (around a 1/2 hour or less).

Thanks to @paryzer for the inspiration to order from Fernandes 3 tonight. 1 steak, 1 picadino misto, 1 stuffed sole and 1 paella Valencia (shared by 2). Apps were garlic shrimp and clams casino, they must have given us a dozen Portuguese rolls!

Everything was great, the clams casino didn’t travel well so they were mushy but very tasty. Not their fault but wouldn’t order to go again.

Mind you we split the paella and I ate with a vengeance tonight and still had a full large to-go dish of left overs.

That all looks amazing. I love their garlic shrimp. They have nice slivers of garlic in it. I definitely have to try the paella next time. I see what you mean about being enough for 4 people. I actually had my leftover steak for dinner tonight.

I must say, if I ever cross the “blue pond”, you would be the 1st couple I would contact for restaurant recommendations !!!

Have a wonderful summer. Hope that the lock down restrictions are “easing up” to a more normalcy level. Take care. Gorgeously done photographs.

Thank you @Barca! We would love to visit Spain and dine with you at your mouth watering Michelin star restaurants.

They were supposed to start opening indoor dining in NJ but postponed it since the number of cases were rising in cities that recently opened indoor dining. Some restaurants are creatively providing outdoor dining (taking over parking lots and streets with canopies and tents), but it is too hot and humid to dine out in the summer, so we continue to order mostly gourmet takeout. As weather permits we try and enjoy the dinner on our beautifully decorated deck by Mrs. P. It is the best seat in the house  I miss dining out indoors.

I am glad that things are easing up in your country and you are able to enjoy some outdoor dining.
Enjoy the rest of your summer and stay safe!

JR-
was everything besides the clams ok upon travel? Pics of the paella might have finally convinced wife to try this spot to my joy. since we’re about the same distance wondering if anything needed to be reheated- might do this for an outdoor dinner this weekend but since we’ll be outdoor plan is to dig in right there and not run back to oven, etc… Any idea $$ wise what that paella was- friends might want to order this too and I know I’ll get that question…lol
Also - how was pickup process if you don’t mind me asking- easy to do? Lord knows it looks amazing.
Sorry for the 21 questions here- but man do I wanna dig in to that pan…

Yes, everything else was fine. The clams were just soggy, I still ate 3 or 4 of them, their taste was good just consistency didn’t hold up.

Nothing else needed to be reheated, it was all still very warm / hot by the time it made the 25± min trip home.

I’m sorry I don’t know how much it was, I tried to google it for you and I saw it listed at $35. on some website, it wasn’t their web site though so I can’t swear to it’s accuracy, honestly that sounds too cheap to me for the amount you get.

I only picked it up once and that was several weeks ago when restrictions were much tighter. My kids didn’t complain about it and my daughter is a covid pain in the ass, so if there was something wrong I would have heard about it. lol

No problem with the questions, isn’t that what we are all here for!!! Enjoy!

Fernandes was the spot for a recent anniversary dinner.
Enjoyed Grouper with Clams, Ribeye, and grilled Lubina. Started off with an excellent Avocado stuffed with Shrimp and Crab. I always overorder there.

Leftovers made for a 2nd dinner last night.
