Favorite sandwiches (SFBA)

Chuck’s Takeaway: C.P.’S NO. 3 -Vietnamese baguette, Pâté Maison, pork cha, chicken liver pâté, shallot mayo, soft herbs, cucumber, jalapeño.
Bread is great, high quality cold cuts and super fresh herbs. I ordered extra jalapeños but still could barely discern them. Agree with @mariacarmen that it needs the pickled veggies as a contrast, otherwise tastes a little flat, so I added the pickled cauliflower and peppers that come on the side. The cucumber is not pickled. They add 15% service charge so with tax $19.99 out the door. Its a good sandwich, but even if it was $8 I prefer Saigon Sandwich or Dinosaurs for boldness and complexity of flavors.

An old favorite (of mine), Lee’s Deli in San Francisco is closing its last two locations. They had freshly roasted turkey for sandwiches, and a big salad bar/Chinese food buffet.

When I used to work in SoMA and then the Financial District, Lee’s was one of my go-to places for lunches that didn’t break the bank. I especially liked their banh mi.

It’s painful to learn of family after family suffering as the Quans have.

I’mm not a fan of the Local Kitchens chain (too many order screwups), but I just read that sandwiches from New Orleans’ Turkey and the Wolf are now available under the banner of Flavor Trippin’. Has anyone tried these? The mortadella one sounds promising…

Saigon Sandwich- still so so good, and at $5.50 half the price of most around town.

For those in the Vallejo/Benicia area I highly recommend One House Bakery in Benicia. We go on a regular basis and our favorite sandwiches are the BLT and the Focaccia Salami Sandwich. Benicia is a quaint sleepy little town with art galleries and it’s fun to walk down 1st street down to the little pier with views of the Carquinez Strait. One Bakery is also known for it’s pastries which we have tried and are excellent.

The “Mark” - Imported Mortadella, Prosciutto, Hot Coppa, Pepper Salame, Roasted Peppers, Pepperoncinis, Fresh Mozzarella, Oil, Vinegar, on Sour Roll, from Calabria Brothers in the Excelsior District of SF. Pretty amazing Italian deli with high quality cold cuts, cheeses, pastas, etc. This was a kick ass sandwich, although not cheap. With tax it was $19.50. Molinari’s in North beach is cheaper, but there are no lines here and the parking is a thousand times easier.

B on the go, SF
Porchetta with chicharones, arugula and chimichurri on ciabatta- pretty excellent and a bargain at $11.50.

Of course I had to go across the street to B Paltisserie. The seasonal mango lychee kouign aman might be my favorite yet. Love their bostock. $3.75 for that big ass cookie.

Ilana Coffee, Clement Street and 24th.
Their banh mi are excellent - the BBQ pork is warm and tender, the veggies are fresh, the aioli is garlicky, the pickled veggies are not too sweet, and the bread is crisp and flaky. around $9.

M Stop Deli - A Muni themed Halal Deli on San Jose Ave. in San Francisco.

I’ve been a few times, and really like their sandwiches. Although they seem a bit pricey ($19.50 after tax - but then again everything seems pricey these days), the quality of the ingredients is higher than say Roxie Deli nearby. And yes, you do want to get it “Sal’s Way.”

Looks good, and I like the old Muni ticket themed menu

Yeah they went all-in on the Muni theme - they have a row of actual Muni seats to sit while you wait for your sandwich.

I had a bite from M Stop before watching the Niners game today, which I am currently trying to forget :sob:

The M going by M Stop. I took the M train to get to M Stop, natch. The deli is aptly named as there is a M line stop right next to it.

Lots of Muni and Bay Area sports memorabilia.

The Muni chairs! There are also a few tables inside if you want to have your sandwich for here.

I had the M Line sandwich which has halal tri-tip with BBQ sauce, Cheddar cheese, with everything “Sal’s Way” on Dutch Crunch. It’s a really good, juicy sandwich. The beef was very tender and saucy, and the bread while crunchy on top as it’s Dutch Crunch was nice and soft. It was well constructed sandwich with good proportion of fillings to bread, which is slightly hollowed out.

I also had a Milaf date flavored cola.

Wish I could find Dutch Crunch up north here, it would be my sammich bread of choice. Tasty looking sub!

I like the sandwiches at Mario’s Bohemian Cigar Store Cafe in North Beach. Tonight I tried one I hadn’t had before - the Grilled Chicken #1 ($18), which has dijon mustard, pepper jack cheese, and onions on green onion focaccia bread from nearby Liguria bakery. It was a very good sandwich. The chicken was moist and tender, the cheese was melty, the bread was toasty, and the Dijon mustard added some nice tangy sharpness. The vinegary pepperoncinis on the side were nice to munch on between bites of sandwich.

On a previous visit a few months ago I had the sandwich I usually get here - the Meatball ($18), which is also on Liguria focaccia. The meatballs in the sandwich, which are quite substantial, were in a marinara sauce with melty mozzarella cheese.

I had a Ruben Rye sandwich at Hot Johnnie’s in the Castro last weekend. Their Ruben has sauerkraut, 1000 Island dressing, and pastrami rather than the traditional corned beef. It’s on a marble rye. I added Swiss cheese to make it more Reuben like. It was a good sandwich. The proportions of meat and sauerkraut were good, and the pastrami was juicy and smoky.

It came with some waffle cut fries, there’s also house made potato chips or apple coleslaw as other options.

The menu - there’s a bunch of pastrami sandwiches along with other sandwiches.
