Mushy peas are fairly rare in this part of Canada, too. They’re a side at the spot where I will buy my fish and chips tonight, but I’ll pass . LOL. I have a can in the pantry that I have been ignoring.
The only tie I have to SPD is that my older child was due to be born on it, and wasn’t. That said, I love corned beef, and was so excited to snag a snake river farms corned beef at Costco for what (I think) is a smashing good price of $9/lb. I boiled it up yesterday and besides being a smidge salty, which frankly I like, it is very very tasty. Today I’m serving it with some roasted potatoes, carrots, brussels. I am hopeful there will be leftovers which will of course become reubens.
My stepfather was Irish so we do corned beef and cabbage with carrots, potatoes and onions ……. but with the leftover corned beef I find the best Jewish rye bread I can.
Does anyone have any special plans for St Paddy’s?
I have brunch plans with an HO on St Paddy’s. I’m waiting to see if there’s anything slightly Irish offered on St Paddy’s.
Maybe I will make Irish Stew for supper on Sunday.
Staying home and avoiding the bars.
Neither me nor my wife are Irish, so we don’t have plans. We did get our yearly loaves of soda bread: one from Boudin Bakery (with raisins, more scone-like) and one from a local bakery (no raisins, basically Irish brown bread).
I think I’ll try to find a bakery selling soda bread in Toronto this weekend.
I made the corned beef and cabbage yesterday so we can have it all weekend.
I live near a very Irish part of town, so I will be avoiding that area. Not because of the locals, but because of the “amateurs”.
The real parade will be held next Saturday, and that is the main event. My friends at my preferred local watering hole will be attending that, as will I.
Nice! I think I’ll get a take-out pub dinner tonight.
That’s a good choice any day of the week! Enjoy
No Irish connections here, but we like the food! I’m making corned beef with carrots and potatoes as we speak. We’ve already eaten one soda bread loaf from Mollie Stone’s (the perennial favorite) and are working our way through one from Nugget (too salty).
I was trying to find a soda bread already baked here in Toronto. Bakeries are more obsessed with the French stuff.
The George St Diner in Toronto has a soda bread mix for sale, and they also serve Irish breakfasts. I won’t make it there this weekend, but may next week!
I think this will be part of my dinner tonight.
Aloette to Go in Toronto
We met up with some friends in Pearl River, NY yesterday, an Irish enclave in Rockland County just north of the Jersey border. Cute main street lined with a huge variety of Irish pubs. We had fish and chips with a few pints of Smithwicks for lunch and then pub hopped for a few more drinks. Beautiful day for it and crowds were minimal. The town is doing their parade (NY State’s second largest) today, so I’m guessing that’s why it was relatively quiet yesterday. You couldn’t pay me to go out there today! I might make some Shepherd’s pie to enjoy here at home, though.
I’ve had good results with her recipes if you want to bake it yourself:
Irish soda bread for breakfast bought from Smith’s supermarket up the street. Though this may surprise some here, I’m not really sure if I’ve ever had any before!
I really enjoyed it as I like the flavor profile of the ingredients. I toasted it quite lightly and topped it with a little bit of butter. Sorry for the crumby photo. I should have been more careful in cleanup before taking it.
DH baked up some Irish soda bread buns this am, they came out pretty good.
Beef, cabbage, potatoes and carrots later on.
Looks great but not enough butter!
We’re not doing anything specifically for it today. Dinner tonight will be flounder with a cheddar mashed potato crust, which I guess will be Irish-adjacent. Perhaps we’ll listen to the Dropkick Murphys with dinner.
Thank you!! Maybe for Irish St Joe’s day (San Giuseppe, March 19th )
Mashed tater makes it Irish, not adjacent!
