Egg shortage: January 2025

The above post was from Jan. 13th. The price today for XLg brown Market Basket Cage Free eggs was $5.49/dozen. So while not an astronomical price hike like others are seeing around the country, it’s still a hefty jump over a 3-1/2 month period.

Prices ranged from $4.29 to $6.99/dozen for Large or XL. Didn’t look at the Medium or Jumbo egg prices, but they had plenty in stock.

So even MB had to deal with the ongoing egg price issues.

Where I live and shop - PNW chain grocery stores - large eggs have been holding steady at $10.39 for 18 for months now. I had anticipated a bit of a decrease, but not to be.

There was a digital coupon at Safeway this week (starting today). Large Eggs - $2.47/dozen (limit 2). I overslept and got there an hour after they opened, there were only 3 dozen left. I got my two, but feel bad for the next person(s).

I had put all quiche making on hold (until the price came down a bit), but I think I might make a chicken quiche next week.

SF Bay Area, some grocery stores egg prices have leveled off while others continue to charge more. Sprouts has 18 pasture raised (non-organic) eggs for $6.79 or so. A dozen cage free at Grocery Outlet run $11.89 or so.

ShopRite (Aberdeen NJ) has large white for $4.49/dozen, and large brown cage-free for $5.99/dozen.

(Note: saying where you are–even if it’s just which country–would be informative.)

My local Lucky’s no longer sells Reser’s deviled egg style potato salad. :pensive:

They said it got “too expensive” and “wasn’t fair”. I don’t understand the “fair” part.

Husbands second favorite carb that I don’t need to make. His first favorite was rice and peas from a local Jamaican restaurant, and they recently closed their brick and mortar.

Trader Joe’s in Asheville is now allowing 2 doz/customer. Still $3.49 for cage-free.

Such a bummer for both of you - for different reasons!

Egg supply / availability here in metro-area MN seems to have stabilized, no empty cases in the past month. Today at Costco $5.19 for a carton of 18 (egg source - Harris, Iowa). My usual grocery still has 6.49/dozen price - at least it’s starting to trend downward.

So while lower than my post from May 3, not a LOT lower where I noted prices ranged from $4.29 to $6.99/dozen for Large or XL.

same currently in Indianapolis.

I picked up 2 dozen eggs this morning. They were on digital coupon for $2.47/dozen (limit 2). I got up early and arrived at Safeway, just as they opened. I got my 2 dozen, but there were only about 20 cartons left, so I know they ran out fairly quickly.

I want to make a quiche next week – now I feel I have enough eggs in stock to make it – without running out.

Trader Joe’s increased theirs here to $4.79/doz

Costco in maplewood MN had a good supply with an 18 count for just over $5

M o the area grocery stores have a dozen for around 6 or so. My CSA share starts in a few weeks.

Eggs are on sale tomorrow for $1.97/dozen on digital coupon. Sadly, I’m all stocked up and don’t really have any more room in the fridge for eggs.

I hope this is a sign of things to come and they stay down in price.

PNW, but off the main transportation corridor: Last week we were still at $9.69 for a box of 18 commodity eggs, and the shelves were wiped out. :crying_cat_face:

Extra-Large brown cage-free eggs (Market Basket, New England-based) were $4.37/dozen this weekend. Prices ranged from the $3.99 for Large up to $6.99/dozen for specialty names.

Hannaford’s (also local to New England) shows XL cage-free eggs to be $4.39 while the large are also at $3.99. Specialty names (Vital Farms) Large Pasture-Raised are $7.49/dozen; Pete & Gerry’s XL Organic Free Range are $7.19/dozen; Eggland’s Best Large Cage-Free Omega A eggs are $6.29/dozen.

So prices remain high(er) than they were before the bird flu outbreak.
