My SO recently retired from construction and was a master carpenter. He dealt with all kinds of abuse as an apprentice. Know what he DIDN’T do when he brought up his own apprentices? That’s right. He did not treat them badly.
In my own career I’ve experienced all sorts of idiocy and abusive people. I did not let that affect me being kind to those I trained once I got into management.
So there’s no excuse for treating employees like crap. I don’t care what industry you’re in.
This Redzepi guy sounds like an ass and would probably do the same in any place or industry he worked.
That said, and to stay on topic, $1500 a person ($3K for us both) is not worth it to me. For that money, SO and I can go on a lovely week long vacation somewhere warm and tropical. Or we can patronize several local eateries over the course of a month.
Yeah, he’s not curing cancer he’s serving food to rich people. Also not sure if dredging up another as*hole chef makes this one look better… Anyway, some posters got huffy when I posted one of his plates that didn’t appeal to my dining aesthetic but this one makes me laugh. That’ll be a hard no from me.
hey folks - don’t get played by the trolls. some really do get their kicks putting/seeing others in emotional distress.
all tickets for the event have been sold & all seats are taken. anybody here offering “invites” to the event is trolling. anybody here saying they want to go but have scheduling/financial/what have you conflicts is trolling.
What are you referring to? I see exactly zero posts in this thread doing what you’re warning against, unless it’s the lighthearted exchange between @ipsedixit and @emglow101 that I dont think anyone took seriously. And that’s not trolling as it is usually defined.
Really hoping Rene does something interactive like disappearing from public life or giving credit for all the ideas he has taken from staff he exploited.
Maybe he’ll do an interactive tutorial of how to most effectively punch someone in the stomach. You can watch it while eating a dish of foraged microplastic over a bed of fermented mold. Very avant-garde.
Looks like he abused foreign help the most because he knew he could get away with it. I found this online and it tracks with NY times story and many personal anecdotes. This story shocked me and I probably would have just moved on and hoped and assumed that he would suffer financially and disappear like some well known men during the me too movement but seeing people laugh this off or not care and reading about other chefs that are defending him makes me really depressed. One step forward 5 steps back.
“Copenhagen here.
Rene has in local business circles been known as a predator and man of temper violence since the beginning of his career. And to put it plain, the man should have been spending the last years in a prison cell if the world was a fair place. Rumors say, that when finding out how bad it was, that’s what made one of the other founders of noma, Claus Meyer, to pull out.
The most disgusting thing about RR is how well thought through and managed the whole scheme of abuse was. Almost all of the victims were foreigners in a new country, barely making it financially with no or minimal salary paid, more or less depending on the network noma provided for, many with a work permit tied to employment on noma, and noma with the power to blacklist you in worst case, or give you poor recommendations in best case if you made any troubles. All points mentioned in ILO conventions of labour exploitation as characteristics of the exploitation trap.
Meaning when the abuse and assaults started the victims had only two choices, to accept it or to very well risk everything that had made em come to noma. That’s how this could go on for almost 2 decades, and why people only speak up years after violence happened, making criminal legal actions almost impossible.”
That explains a lot. Basically it was organized crime or racketeering, labor abuse, extortion and rent scheme. The prestige element buried things further. I read through a bunch of stuff and only one guy left and flew home with his family. In any case, this sleazebag did this for two decades…no pass or apologies accepted if it went on for that long. That’s beyond a few mistakes or a pattern, that’s an established criminal lifestyle.
I wonder how karma gets this guy. On another note, I think someone will produce a movie or novel….where this chef mobster meets real mobsters and much fun, hilarity and death ensues. I can see it now…Russian mafia comes for dinner because head man’s daughter gets an internship.
Noma’s target audience isn’t the demographic to care about the people that were abused - or regret their part in supporting and perpetuating that cycle.
