For a few hundred more, I can feed 2-3 people for an ENTIRE YEAR!!
i thought about the âTracking household grocery expensesâ topic after reading the OP of this topic.
On a couple of occasions, Iâve been able to serve a protein, starch and vegetable for under $1 per serving.
$1,500 for one meal - just hurts my brain. I think I would be too upset to even eat it.
They are basically paying you to eat the meal with all of that âcharityâ, right? First class tickets donât pay for themselves.
A lot cheaper and less effort than a trip to Copenhagen for those who want to experience Noma food.
(Also the math I did for some folks when Massimo Bottura went to India and the meal was priced at 2.5x the most expensive restaurant meal available in India then â if they wanted to eat his cooking, were they going to make it to Modena, and how much would that trip cost? No math was needed, though, because the event sold out before it went public.)
And for Noma, itâs a tax write off.
Win, win. Win!
Of course people will pay the price. They order tomahawk steaks, right?
Youâre missing my point, likely intentionally.
If youâre not the target audience for Noma, itâs irrelevant.
If you are, itâs probably a bargain and not sticker shock.
Redzepi has drunk too much of his own hyperlocal, wild-fermented, ultra-centrifuged Kool-Aid.

His food holds absolutely zero appeal for me, apart from the obscene cost. Of course, we all know how important bragging rights are for the 1%: the more expensive, the better ![]()
SoâŚNoma is donating 1% of every meal purchased to provide âprofessional training sessions and community for school districts in and around the Los Angeles area" - thatâs $15 each plate.
And there are only 42 seatings per night, from March 11 to June 26, 4 nights a week.
So if my mathâs correct, thatâs about $2500/night - a total of about $40,000 over the period of time that Noma will be doing their super-secret pop-up. Push come to shove - thatâs NOT a lot of money to provide âprofessional training sessionsâ in the L.A. area.
Seems like a lot of hoopla that seems to be more about being âinâ and âexclusiveâ. But as said above, thereâs a sucker born rather frequently.
By far not everybody who is interested in such dinners is doing it for bragging rights but are simply interested in experiencing outstanding restaurants and dishes. I find it odd how disrespectful (and painting in very broad stroked strokes without even knowing anybody) some people are towards people who might have other interests and priorities how they spend time and money then themselves
the math adds up to $17,640 total donations.
$15 x 42/night x 28 nights = $17,640
This being a discussion forum about food, opinions about various topics are bound to differ between posters.
Iâm not against how anyone spends their money, because itâs theirs after all and Iâm sure some stuff I spend on others think Iâm nuts. The thing is, food is essential to living and everyone, so the reactions of a pricey meal often has a visceral reaction. I get bothâŚbeen to 3 star places but the current economy has me often doing a second glance at everything.
I have no aspirations of going to Noma mostly because of their business model, using intern chefs who pay their own way. Come on man, youâre the number rated restaurant in the world. FFSâŚact like it, man TF up and pay peopleâŚ.or Jack up prices to pay for it allâŚno BS free labor. Of course they shut down, so now itâs a road showâŚand the donation to training sounds like a feel good scam so many use as deflective PR. Standard corporate BS. I just disagree with how they conducted business in the past.
This doesnât even include the violent bullying and demeaning that one must also endure for the privilege of living in a tent while working for free. Part of the privilege of wealth is excess (perhaps not employed by all) and this is certainly one embodiment of that ethos. The cost is merely one factor in what could turn someone off about this.
Less than a 1/3rd (ROUGHLY) of one nightâs gross.
I came up with 64 nights since itâll be happening 4 nights a week (16 weeks total based on the dates mentioned). $15 x 42 seats x 64 nights = $40K.
Either way - not a whole lot.
