Demystifying sugar plums

Like plum pudding, sugar plums contain no plum. Sugar plums ARE candy, and very complicated, both in the making and the lore:

Our young adult son is very fond of the Tasting History series. We watched this episode a few nights ago at his request. Really interesting!

It reminds me of the very brief appearance of Ben & Jerry’s sugar plum ice cream, which I tried in 1989. I actually liked it. When we visited the B&J’s factory store in Vermont and took the tour, many years ago I saw this flavor was in the B&J Graveyard. I mentioned to the tour guide that I actually liked it, way back then. She looked at me sadly and said, “I think you were the only person who liked it.”

Plum Ice Cream with a Caramel Swirl

It swirled in our heads,
It danced in our dreams,
It proved not to be though,
The best of ice creams.

Well, first I’ve got to decide which choreography I like better - Balanchine’s or Petipa’s.

I visted the B&J factory back on my honeymoon in 1990 (before the Unilever buyout). It was probably the hilight of the trip.

Personally, I’ve never forgiven them for killing off Doonsberry Sorbet (later renamed “Very Berry”). It was an awesome raspberry blueberry swirl. It’s a goal to reproduce it at home.

Also, I <3 Tasting History. It’s great fun, and watching him make sugar plums convinced me that even with the kitchen aid mixer candy tumbler attachment, making my own jawbreakers would absolutely NOT be with the time, effort, or expense.

So, bullet dodged there.
