It was the case in my lifetime that many council areas in Wales were dry on Sundays, with pubs and bars closed. My father told me that this didnt apply to bars in hotels which, unsurprisingly, were very busy on Sundays. He knew of one pub where the border between two council areas actually ran through the pub - one dry council, one wet, which meant the pub could served alcohol in one of its bars but not the other. In 1996, the law was changed allowing all premises to open on Sundays.
This thread has had many twists and turns. Good luck finding your way back.
Prohibition really fragmented the laws on alcohol sales all over the US. Nearly 90 years since the repeal and they are still insanely complicated in many places.
And it will only get worse as the same forces that imposed the disaster of Prohibition on the country gain in political power.
Whether I agree or not, I make it a point not to discuss politics on any public forum.
Kinda supposed to keep politics out of the conversation.
I thought about what to say about this. I suppose my comment is borderline political, but it is relevant to the insanity of our liquor laws. One cannot ignore how we got to that point.
one can wander over to the 'What’s on your mind?" topic. Perfectly OK there.
Your liquor laws aren’t restrictive compared to the liquor laws in the Canadian provinces.
In Ontario, beer has only been available in some grocery stores and some gas station variety stores the past 3 years, which was a result of the current Gov’t.
Liquor in Ontario and Quebec, liquor is only available at province-run liquor stores, and a few licensed Liquor control board outlets operating out of some gas station convenience stores in some rural communities. These state-run stores close by 9 pm most nights and 5 pm on Sundays, and are closed on holidays. They weren’t open on Sundays until the 1980s.
I guess you get used to the rules in your own region, and either think they’re ok or too stringent. From my perspective, I don’t think it’s a great idea to sell booze at a gas station.
Not too surprising, I suppose, since in La Belle Provence everything is named after saints!
The residents of Quebec have long been living their lives in response to the control of the (catholic) church, and as a result, they go to church less than the other provinces, practice more birth control, have the lowest birth rate , have more children outside wedlock, tend to have children later in life than some provinces where people get hitched at 21 and have lower marriage rates.
Quebec is also the only province with affordable daycare for children.
The Quebec age of majority for drinking is 18 (it’s also 18 in Alberta), whereas it’s 19 in most provinces.
Quebec has a lot of things figured out.
I know. My family, all of whom immigrated from Québec since the mid-19th century–I am between second and fourth generation American depend on the line–have largely freed themselves from those shackles. They were still very strong when I was growing up in the 1950s and 1960s.
It’s so difficult remaining silent in times like this. In addition to politics being a prohibited topic, people who don’t know politics or history ought not post about them.
Well now I am Completely offended. Not.
I tried just once to post about Wicca. I even said that I felt happy that just once I could type one tiny thing.
It was a brilliant post about how in times like this the Crones come forth and stand ahead of the maidens and mothers.
ONE person took this personally and typed why can’t I just be a regular person?
Why is it about reproduction?
If one person takes offense game over. I apologized and tiptoed away tail between my legs and heartbroken.
I feel your pain.
Go get them brave tiger.
This. Hey I thought you were gonna post about gaming over there? Taps foot impatiently.
Just so you people know I am mocking this thread over there.
I call it Harter’s Feast of the Damned.

Makes me happy to be in the NE usa. Plus the extra side of rudeness.
The rumors about the NE being rude are by no means exaggerated. Woot
Ignorance of history is a serious problem. As someone said, those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it.
