Clear liquid diets

Hi - I think you’re going to find particulate that gets through even cheesecloth, with miso. Well strained dashi, perhaps (if you’re looking to scratch an itch on a particular flavor)? Otherwise seasoned stock or clear broth (both well strained if homemade), water, clear carbonated beverages. For tea, see what your doctor recommends.

I ended up having a can of Chinese -style clear chicken broth this afternoon.

I had opened up a can of beef consommé which is more clear, but decided to check before having it. My doctor’s secretary’s first email had said to avoid even black coffee and tea, but didn’t say anything about beef consommé, so I emailed her to check, and turns out they would prefer that I not have the beef consommé.

I should have bought more of the chicken broth. It started to snow and it was almost white-out conditions coming home, so I’ll be resorting to Better than Bouillon if I’m craving more chicken broth after this first can is finished. Lol.

The white cherry Gatorade is fine. I drank two 48oz bottles last time…

Anyone have some new tips for a clear diet?
I’ll be buying some more of that clear Chinese chicken broth and lemon Jell-O.

The ones we do:
Gatorades and Powerade beverages, both regular and ‘diet’
Martinelli’s apple juice (it’s so sweet, I have to diute it)
White grape juice (ditto about dilution)
True Lemon brand drink mix: Limeade and lemonades, Triple Citrus is a fave
The usual teas and coffee, usually the de-caf ones
Consommé, beef with a squirt or two of lemon
Japanese clear soup mixes
Popsicles (root beer, banana)
Jell-o
Flat 7-up, ginger ale
I have to go on clear liquid diets several times a year, sometimes for 48 hours before the tests or procedures. I’m so used to doing this, it isn’t a problem anymore.
Some procedures require no red, blue or purple items. That means no red jellos or popsicles :persevere:

I don’t find the ones I get are clear. Well, you can see through them, but they’re brown in color.

The protocol here has changed as to defining ‘clear liquids’. They state as long as you can see through it, it’s good. Except for the red/purple/blue restriction. So sometimes cranberry juice is okay, some others say no and sometimes it isn’t even cranberry juice but ‘cranberry beverage’. They gave me awful beef broth in the hospital last year when I was on clear liquids for a week post surgery. When I asked for something tastier, I got Campbell’s beef consommé.
I think the idea now is to make the experience as pleasant as possible by allowing some ‘wiggle room’ in nourishment. It has changed a lot since I was writing diets and menus bitd.

It’s all yellow or clear no colour for this diet.

Can you have (local) honey? The last time that I needed to do the clear liquid diet thing, I took a little bit of honey on a spoon from time to time to keep my stomach settled. It helped me.

I stayed away from the blueberry season honey though, as I didn’t want to chance consuming anything too pigmented.
