Cleaning Sheet Pans?

I don’t mind a bit of grunge, and calling it a patina makes it seem classy-like! What ticks me off, though, is the warp in every single one of my sheet pans. None of them are flat anymore, they all have about the same amount of bow in them.

Especially the non-stick variety. I wouldn’t be without it for larger gatherings.

My daughter buys the double rolls from Costco; I told her your tip. She knew about, gave me a demonstration. I’m going to give it a try. The roll I tried years ago was awful, all curled up. This seems different, a lot less expensive than the flat sheets.

You can also roll it the opposite way, or when it gets to the center of the roll, draw it across the edge of the counter to “stretch” the curl out

My eyes have been opened. The Costco parchment paper rolls are so much less expensive than flat sheets and they don’t curl up like another brand I tried years ago.

There is no Costco here but I have bought parchment paper at Sam’s Club. It is currently $15 for two 205 square foot rolls. How does that compare with Costco?

My MIL has gotten me the big Costco rolls and I’ll say the cut-off sheets don’t misbehave when the roll is still large. Once down to the last 1/3 or so, they do that curly-up thing anyway. I just cut the sheet about 1 inch larger than I need, fold a 1/2 inch crease along both long sides, then invert and place in pan with no problems.

To OP’s question:

  • I ain’t cleaning sheet!

(Sorry; sounded funnier in my head. My real answer is I haven’t found an easy way. Chain mail type scrubber and lots of elbow grease. Mostly I just ignore. I’ve got a couple of “pristine” ones that I only use when serving company. Have you tried the oven cleaner yet, and if so, did it work?)

Costco:

2 rolls, 205 feet each, total: $10 + tax.

OK, Wahine forwarded to me a no-scrub method that is supposedly amazing and easy. I’ve yet to try it, but the TikTok demo looks like this may be the ONLY way to go. WEAR GLOVES.

  1. Liberally sprinkle baking soda over the pan.
  2. Mosten the soda with household-strength hydrogen peroxide. Spread as a paste.
  3. Sprinkle the paste with Comet or another chlorinated cleanser.
  4. Drizzle with Johnson’s baby shampoo.
  5. Add contents of one liquid DW packet. Mix well, and coat entire pan interior with combined ingredients.
  6. Let sit overnight or at least 6 hours.
  7. Rinse.

The pan literally came out looking new–with zero scrubbing.

I am not a chemist, and Chem 101/102 was a LONG time ago… but… any time you start mixing household chemicals and one of them involves chlorine… I would take a LARGE step back. Probably, you’re using everything in too small of quantities to really be of much danger, but even so…

And, you know, TikTok/YouTube/Whatever ‘hacks’ have a whole history of highly questionable (and outright fraudulent) content, some of which borders into downright dangerous and irresponsible.

Most of us spend time seasoning our CS and CI. Why should sheet pans be any different?

Good cautions. It may be a fraud. But I’m going to give it a try–gloved, outside, and upwind.

I’ll also try to link the TikTok.

Because aluminum does not need, nor accept, seasoning.

With all due respect, that is a bunch of hooey. Baking soda is a mild scouring agent. Hydrogen peroxide is a mild bleach. The baby shampoo is just a mild soap. You could just use the Comet and get the same result. Personally, I like Bon Ami because it does not scratch.

I’ve been using baking soda and hydrogen peroxide for decades. nothing more. leave on over night. some people use baking soda and white vinegar.

Once I put baking soda and white vinegar to soak overnight; it made a ripple design etch into my pan. Oh well, I just live with these pans not looking new ever again.

So, you’re saying you’ve tried this method?

It sounded iffy to me, but now that you’ve pronounced on it, I’m guaranteed to try it.

For our Easter (its all about the candy) dinner today, we did lemon roasted potatoes. On a grungy looking sheet pan. Potatoes with an olive oil/lemon juice marinade cooked at 450F for about 45 minutes. They were great, and would do it again. I had clean up duty and was not looking forward to it. Scrapped the burnt bits off and took an SOS pad to rest. It was a piece of cake, so much came off, I probably could of used a sponge. Think it must of been the acid in the lemon juice.
I received this sheet pan as a shower gift in 1981. Its not perfect but it looks pretty good.
Planning to boil some lemon & water and let it soak on a few other pans.
