Carnegie Diner?

A place called Carnegie Diner opened near me in Vienna, VA. Apparently has two locations in Manhattan, soon to have another.

They push the pastrami pretty hard.

Has anyone been?

No need to go. It has nothing to do with the defunct Carnegie Deli. It’s an overpriced mediocre diner for unaware tourists in the Times Square area. The pastrami is shit, not the shit.

Thanks. I’ve wandered by and wondered. Will stop (the wondering, at least.)

I have no interest in going. When a restaurant is based on someone else’s glory, I need some compelling endorsements before I go.

In their slight defense the original was Carnegie Deli, and its days of glory were well in the past. This is “Diner”. Still, I’m savvy, not stupid the way everybody said Fredo was, and I recognize that they’re attempting to trade off a name. Tell that to Ray.

From Facebook comments, the trick is working for them. Lots of people believe it’s the Carnegue deli yore. Sigh!

It’s basically food fraud. It’s true that Carnegie Deli was way past its prime when it closed. I used to go there periodically to grab a sandwich to go as it was close to my office. Unlike Katz’s there was never a line. Better than your average deli but nowhere close to Katz’s, 2nd Ave, Sarges etc. This is nothing but a bald face deceit. The pastrami at Junior’s is better. That’s not much of an endorsement.

My dad kept a studio apt a couple of blocks from the Carnegie because his business required weekly NYC trips (and it was cheaper than a hotel room at the time). I made many stops at the Carnegie. BTW the Carnegie’s demise was rather scandalous.

I was already sure there was no relationship between the Restaurant and the Deli. In terms of my area (suburb of DC), there seems to be no such claim. When I’ve passed by the place, there is no clear mention they even have a place in NYC.

One of the reasons I asked: it was recommended to me by trustworthy HO folks who live in Vienna, though I don’t recall a specific rec…

In addition to the old Carnegie, back in the day in the 'hood was the Stage Deli, which I once loved. I left NYC about 50 years ago. I know it closed, but how was it toward the end? Same downward trajectory as the Carnegie?

My wife and her colleagues who worked at Carnegie Hall went to the Carnegie Diner and enjoyed it, but the area near Carnegie Hall isn’t full of great options for a quick (or affordable) lunch.

Sadly yes.

I worked in the area for a long time. I would say you have to know where to go. I think there are many good lunch options.

My wife worked there a long time. There really aren’t many good options close by and definitely few affordable ones. A lot of mediocre options for sure. The hot dog cart directly in front of CH is one of the best options nearby.

If she is still there here are some suggestions

Wu Liang Ye is pretty decent sichuan. Lunch special there is only $12-14.
Empanada Mama - some of the best empanadas in the city
Real Kung Fu Little Steamed Bun - some really good XLB. Has bib gourmand from Michelin
L’Ami Pierre - $15 combo of jambon beurre with soup
Kosher Deluxe - the shawarma platter here is the real deal
The steak freak cart on 50th is really good
Little Zeus cart also on 50th for Greek

My wife worked across from Carnegie Hall in the building above Brooklyn Diner. We went back recently & thought it was not bad at all. Friendly, decent food &, of course, overpriced.

Brooklyn Diner. Yes. Matzo ball soup is surprisingly good.

Yeah, gone. I went there several times with my parents. I haven’t been to NYC in a couple of decades; it was still there the last time I was in that neighborhood but I think even then the bloom was off the rose. I remember the menus with Max’s caricature on them. There was a resurrected Lindy’s in the neighborhood, too.

What avenues?

ETA: And to add to your suggestions:

  1. I’ve liked Margon, especially the octopus salad.
  2. I like the kebabs at Saar.
  3. There’s still this and that odd good thing at Urban Hawker.
  4. Don Antonio for pizza, salads and apps.
  5. There’s a good taco truck on 6th between 52nd and 53rd.

Concur on all counts. Their pastrami is juicy and thick-cut (and expensive).

On the west side of 6th

Is the taco truck the birria truck? That’s a good one. Also Jamrock Jerk which comes only on tuesdays to 6th and 51st.
