We’ll be bouncing around this area after the weather warms, with a few days in Ashland/Medford (booking 3 plays), a day trip to Crater Lake, and a few days in Redwood NP. We’ll need to eat several times a day, and seek your advice. Nancy eats light with very little red meat. My preferences differ. I also want to sample some NW IPAs. Many thanks in advance.
Crater Lake has had way above normal snowfall this year, I was thinking about going in July or August so will appreciate your report if you get there before I do. I’d expect very limited options in/around the park, like granola bars at the gift shop and whatever the concessionaire of the lodge offers. But it is STUNNING.
Ashland is great, though. I’m going this weekend for the chocolate festival and a preview of The Importance of Being Earnest. In past years I’ve enjoyed Blue Toba, House of India, Razi Authentic Burmese Kitchen, and Cocorico.
Thanks, Babette. Crater Lake is a maybe – or a hopefully – for us. Nancy went before and it was too cloudy to see anything. We’ll make a game time decision, and probably stop on the way to or from to get a bite
Let me assemble a few ideas.
Ashland Food Co-op is good for picnic supplies if you’re downtown, or Shop’n’Kart on the South end.
Murphy’s Market and Deli near Patrick’s Point if you venture that far south. Their sandwich and other food from the counter is good.
And dependent on which road you take to Redwood national park- Seaquake Brewing in Crescent City. Gastropub.
After the Grand Canyon, Crater Lake is the most stunning site in the US. If she didn’t get to see it the first time, a visit should not be a maybe. Also, doing a boat trip on the lake (steep but manageable trail to descend) is a pure joy.
Aside for lodging in the park, Diamond Lake Resort is the closest lodging and food.
BTW, Redwoods NP is not necessarily the best place to go view Redwoods. Jedediah Smith State Park has a more impressive grove.
The most acclaimed place currently.
My favorite place is in Talent. Exquisite food.
We’ve been to the redwoods several times, stayed at Jedediah twice – a gorgeous campground. We haven’t found any restaurants in the area of interest, at least nothing N of Arcata. There are some OK spots in Crescent City for buying ingredients if you’ll be camping.
Thanks! we’ll be see Wilde’s. play when we’re there.!
Thanks, bbqboy!

An interesting place to stay
interesting indeed! But not available on our dates.
We do plan to go to Jedediah Smith as well as the National Park. And we’ll go to Crater Lake weather permitting.
We were at the North Rim lodge at the grand Canyon and saw lightning forming below us. Now that was a sight.

I’m not sure where you’re from or what you’re used to but in general I don’t find the food that interesting. I do recommend a visit to the natural foods coop in Ashland as well as the Rogue Creamery for their Rogue River Blue cheese.
I live in DC . There’s abundant very good food here. The high end food is dominant, but I can and do travel to find really superb local dishes. I’m always interested in local specialties – moreso than the upscale food around here. I actually did a big post on then Rogue Creamery’ award. https://johntannersbbqblog.wordpress.com/2019/10/30/the-best-cheese-in-the-world-is-from-america/
Ashland report:
Really enjoyed dinner at Peerless. The kale salad had an intensely lemony & piquant dressing while the duck was earthy and comforting with a silky parsnip puree, lentils, and mushrooms
Chicken adobo at Harana was good. It’s much more casual and open Sundays when a lot of other places aren’t.
Got lucky with the weather so went to crater lake on 3/10. I think they’ve gotten a few more feet of snow since then. The gift shop does have a cafe with some hot options. Nothing earth shattering but hot fries hit the spot after my 8 mile hike in the snow.
Nice
A heads up to anyone who wants to do this boat tour, do it now. Starting in 2026 there will be construction on that trail which will also prevent any boat or swimming activity on the lake for a few years. Who knows, with all the cuts maybe the project will be on hold.
