Well, I have a recommendation: Bahar in Marina di Ragusa. Even though it is practically on the beach, it is not a tourist trap, nor does it charge tourist trap prices.
The view is spectacular.
The service young and friendly, and there’s a changing daily menu besides the regular menu. A nice wine selection, too.
We had a good caponata with carrots & fennel (!),
a simple, but flavorful salad with local tomatoes, salted ricotta, and onions,
And a fabulous pasta plate with pacchero (sic) in a super-flavorful, rich pistachio sauce with swordfish. A generous portion at that, so half of it came home with us.
My grilled catch of the day was a bit dry, but the veg were cooked perfectly.
Lovely Sicilian rosé to go with.
Wonderful!!! Did you spend any time at the beach there? I loved it…easy to walk into the sea, and so full of life on those beaches… I’m eager to read of your continuing adventures!
We have an absolutely gorgeous beach* in Marina di Modica, where we went yesterday and today. And will go back tomorrow and Saturday morning, before leaving for Ortigia. I’m afraid that will be it with beaches, since my traveling companion needs to get some ‘culture’ or some such in, and sightseeing will be on the agenda.
A good friend of ours who briefly considered buying a house in Sicily — you know, those 1€ deals — got around quite a bit here last year and recommended Donnalucata as a beach. That’s almost a half hour drive, whereas the nearest one is about 5 minutes
*It’s my current header pic
Did you rent a house in Sampieri? Would you recommend that area for a rental? I never got to Marina di Modica but I certainly wish I had had the time. I think you took your trip at a perfect time of year…is the sea pretty warm now? (It was, in early September, even for me, who thinks 82 degrees is the absolute bottom limit for swimming!)
“House” in the broadest sense of the term. I thought I’d linked to it here, but I guess that was in the WFD thread.
It is a very, very, VERY small house (in midst of a Mediterranean shrub garden, with a view of the sea.
It is a kitchenette with a double bunk bed and a separate bathroom. I suppose it depends on you standards. No doubt there are places that are nicer, and don’t require a car trip to eat anywhere.
If you are looking for a beach vacay, there’s several beaches nearby. And Ragusa/Modica are only about 45 min away for excursions (that we haven’t made >cough, cough).
Water is clear as glass & pleasant, it’s very shallow for a looooong time, and the sand is fine and soft.
