Aldi Products Yea/Meh/Nay 2023-2024

Yeah, same here. I asked last time I was there, and the manager said it was a ‘seasonal’ thing.

Glad the last ‘season’ lasted that long, but I think I’m all out of them. BOO HISS indeed.

Interesting. What Aldi was calling was probably different than the real stuff you had, because these were only moderately thick-shelled and not too tough to peel. I do like the flavor.

My absolute favorite though has been the monster Gulf shrimp caught off Florida (pinkish, not tiger/dark), which I’ve gotten a couple of times at the farmer’s market on Captiva Island. I asked the lady how fresh they were and she said “my boys came back with them an hour ago and that’s when I ripped their heads off - fresh enough?” (said with a smile).

I’m not positive but I think these were about 6 or 7 per pound. The shells were so tough that I ripped off half a thumbnail (and I can shred a wooden pencil with my thumbnails). But man! the flavor - loved it and even hours later could recall the taste by swallowing some spit.

I usually peel them when they are still half-frozen, which makes it a lot easier - and I rarely use the tiny tail when I do it that way. I find them to be plump, snappy, and flavorful.

Already looking forward to when they are back in stock.

I ran in there yesterday to grab a couple more of the lamb legs and now they’re carrying rack of lamb at $10/lb. YAY!

So I grabbed 2 of them, too, both around 2.9 lbs. It’s been forever since I cooked lamb rack. Might have to start a thread seeking advice, unless an HO search coughs up a bunch.

Too funny

Circling back on the Priano cannelloni / manicotti and ravioli.

There’s something odd about the pasta in these, it takes forever to cook, and never gets tender.

NAY for both, will not repeat.

Were those rock shrimp from days gone by?

No, the spiny rock shrimp tend a lot smaller. These big ones were the regular pink Gulf shrimp - very hard shell, but not the spiny ridges of the rock shrimp.

Strange! We haven’t had that problem. Possibly too old?

Ravioli were from the freezer, like all the other ravioli I cook without any issues

How do you cook the manicotti?

I just cover the manicotti in tomato-based sauce and cheese and bake til bubbly.

I baked the manicotti for 45 mins covered with sauce and topped with foil and then 10 mins uncovered to brown the top.

The ravioli I boiled for twice the listed time.

I disagree with about half of them :joy:

Most of them I haven’t bought, but I also disagree on some (produce and yogurt, for example). However, Cafe Bustelo is cheaper on sale at ShopRite than at Aldi (though more expensive when not on sale), and they nailed the cream cheese. I have a long list of “don’t buy at Aldi”: raisin bread, cheese curls, triangle cheese, string cheese, turkey, eggs, tuna, canned pineapple, oranges, mushroom soup, wheat thins, cream cheese, lemonade, and chocolate milk. Some don’t taste as good as what I can get elsewhere, some are more expensive, and some seem to go bad faster. The first criterion is of course purely subjective.

that article seems to be more of an ad for reddit than a serious food review.

Most of it is total nonsense.

I agree with a lot on the list. While the chicken breasts haven’t been too bad, the boneless skinless thighs are usually a shredded up mess with lots of fat and scrapped up meat that’s not good for much. I also won’t buy pork there anymore - much more fat than at the other chain grocers. Agree strongly on the cream cheese, too. Not worth using even if it was free.

I don’t like that they add sucralose to their bread/butter pickles, so I disagree with their reco to buy the Great Gherkin b/b pickles.

Dairy must be regional. I buy it all the time and we like it. It works very well in cheesecake, too. How odd.

For what it’s worth I did buy some Philadelphia recently and while it tasted slightly different, I did not think it was better.

I grew up with Philadelphia, but now buy the ShopRite brand. The Aldi brand either tasted too different or had a texture problem. All I know is that it went on my “don’t buy” list several years ago.
