Speaking of Mercado Medellin, on Friday/Saturday/Sunday only, Meche y Raphael serve the best in town carnitas. Totally worth the Uber ride there. Try their chicharrón as well…
Went to Meche y Rafael in 2019. Indeed the best of many I’ve had in CDMX.
And few blocks down from Mercado Medellin is El Hidalguense. Remarkable barbacoa estilo Estado Hidalgo. Open all day long, but only Friday/Saturday/Sunday
I like El Hidalguense but on Sunday morning when the traffic is light I prefer Barbacoa Renatos in Pasteros. Only open on Sunday. Barbacoa is a bit better and they will treat you like you are family.
I was to Barbacoa Renatos a few years ago and liked it as well.
And after partying all night chilangos go to El Borrego Viudo for great tacos. I have never been there during the day but it is open 24 hours. Try suadero or lengua, or even sesos if you fill adventurous. The tacos are consumed with tepache. I believe it is the only alcoholic drink they have.
Still full from the taco tour I went straight into cocktails
Had a 9pm reservation at Bar Las Brujas, glad I did as it’s small and always packed to the rafters.
There’s bar seating and tables and sofas on each side. The lighting is dim, but not too dim so this geezer can’t read the menu. I liked the fact that you’re not elbow elbow with the other patrons, nice and roomy but still intimate. Noise level was high but it was still comfortable, great music and lots of chatting and laughter.
The bartenders were excellent, and it was a great show to watch them in action. Very friendly and helpful with suggestions. Super busy but always on top of things.
I started with a La Nahuala- Havana Club infused with raisin, sour sop Havana liqueur, ginger beer and soda.
Delicious! Sorry, no photo as I was still taking it all in.
Next up was my favourite of the evening, a Reina Yara - Maestro Doble Reposado Tequila, Galiano Herbal liqueur, passion fruit soda and sparkling water. So refresh and good!
Next was the last cocktail of the night, the La Matlazihua- Murichos Espadin Mescal, grasshopper brine and chamomile liqueur garnished with preserved grasshoppers that were super salty and crunchy. Nice and herbaceous, but it was my least favourite of the three. I’m a lightweight when it comes to dranking these days, so I threw in the towel as I was feeling nice and tipsy , but I didn’t want to push it and those cocktails packed a punch
I’m pretty sure they make their own shrubs and infusions as reflected in the quality of the drinks. I definitely recommend getting some drinks here before or after dinner, but make sure to book a spot well in advance or be prepared to get turned away at the door.
Another lovely breakfast in the courtyard.
Churros and fruit to start, followed by an open face ham, cheese and black bean sandwich served with super fresh pico de gallo
, he told me the name of it but of course I forgot

*Sí, sí.
Buen provecho.
Looks like you’re doing it right.
Did your breakfast doggie friend show up?
He did, but I had no food to offer so he left
Sounds like a rather transactional relationship
Totally, and I thought he really liked me
There’s a pretty cool story behind Las Brujas if ya’ll are interested.
Also, make sure you type in Bar Las Brujas if you’re taking an Uber(which you should) as they have two different locations.
Go pet the perro some more, pedropero! You’ll be friends in no time
In what is possibly the most spontaneous thing my husband and I have ever done - we just booked a room at the Red Tree house and booked a flight for August! My weekend plans include scouring these threads and lots of research!
Love this… I’ve been waffling about a trip with a friend to Mexico City in July or August… This trip report may tip the scales!
It’s a wonderful hotel, but you can’t choose the jr suite that you want, if if that matters to you. It’s totally random and some suites are better than others And they’ll offer you a 20% discount if you pay in cash. Something else I didn’t know about until I went to pay my tab.
My pleasure
