24-25 California’s Dungeness crab fishing season delayed! 😲

Couldn’t find it, but…$12.99/pound retail

Last year this time $6.99/pound retail

One of the articles (or the Chron) mentioned a new dock (ADA accessible) in SF fishersman’s wharf or near for sales off the boat to the general public, price: $10/lb.

What do you mean?

Crabs are fine as long as you can keep them alive, but once they’re dead - even if cooked - their quality declines pretty rapidly. I suppose you could crack and pick the meat to freeze, but I wouldn’t ‘stock up’ on more crab than I’d want to eat in, say, five or six days.

I buy extra and what we don’t eat in one sitting gets cleaned, picked apart and double wrapped frozen (for quiche, rangoons, hot crab dishes, etc.). Crab does not stay more than 6 hours in the fridge from the time of purchase. I’m very picky about the crabs I buy and if they don’t meet my strict requirements, they don’t get purchased!

The Dungeness I bought last week were from the Oregon and north coasts. I’m expecting this week’s deliveries to be from Sonoma and south.
Usually they are not older than 2 days from boat to market and on ice.

In that case, hoard on!

I guess I should call it, ‘putting up’.

Intriguing. I think ours come mainly from the Oregon Coast ,
but now you have me wondering.
I’ll ask the meat/seafood guy tomorrow if we import.

HWY 1 from Monterey Bay back to San Francisco. Just happened to cruise by Half Moon Bay’s Johnson Pier.

CRAB. ON!!!

Super feisty ocean fresh. Over 2# each, $12 per lb. The crew on the New Krabmandu was friendly and obviously enjoying the new season.

As already mentioned above, FEISTY!!! These bad boys ain’t going into the pot without a fight! One already took a claw tip off the other, wasn’t ez to break up the crab fight without getting pinched myself!!

See y’all on the WFD thread!!!

$7.99 a pound at Sun’s Market in Millbrae. There was another tank in the rear that had more crab too.

Our local grocer had a delivery yesterday, Oregon coasters for $11.99/lb.
Last week it was $10.98/lb. 1-1/4#ers. I’m really hoping the price goes down per pound and the weights go up!

$11.95/lb. at Alioto-Lazio on Jefferson Street, but now you have to call and pre-order (no walkups), even if you’re picking up an hour later.

Yesterday at our Costco, two crabs to a tray (about 3# per tray, $6.99/lb. They were fresh, I picked for 2 hours, 4 crabs. Two 10 oz. zipper bags of meat was the result were frozen.
There would have been more to freeze, but I had to eat SOME!:crab:

I haven’t seen the thread this year yet, so I thought that I would start it. I was in New Sang Chong market yesterday and saw live crab for sale for $8.99. The tanks were on the other side of the counter, so I could not easily see the size or amount of stock.
