“It is the sixth year in a row that the state has delayed the season, which traditionally opened in time for Thanksgiving, to protect endangered whales from getting entangled in fishing lines. The department said it will provide another update on Nov. 15 about a potential opener of Dec. 1…”
If commercial crab fishing can solve the problems with their lines, there’s no reason to move the season. It won’t be cheap for them to upgrade all their equipment and may require some financial assistance (loans, grants, etc), but it could be done. Everybody wins: Whales, fishermen, consumers. Well, maybe not the crabs.
After.4 or 5 seasons of delays, I just assume crab season starts after Thanksgiving, Christmas holidays and even Chinese NY. The plus side, crabs a little bigger from delay and larger local inventory (and better prices) if Dungeness crabs aren’t in time for CNY in Asia. Supposedly for CNY, they fetch about $100 bucks each.
I think it’s going to take some time for the new line and trap technology to get adapted…until then just assume delays. At least the seasons haven’t been fully canceled.
