Tried the Tortilla Espanola for dinner tonight. I thought it was a new product – I don’t ever recall seeing it before – but when I googled for the link just now I saw some old threads on other sites, so I guess not. Regardless:
MEH, leaning toward YEA. Microwave defrosting instructions, especially given that it’s an egg thing, were a bit scary: 10 minutes! I followed it – I wasn’t in the mood for the 18 minute stovetop option – and it did in fact come out as promised, with a nice texture, not at all rubbery. It’s certainly potato heavy, light on the onion – feels a bit more like a potato dish than an egg dish – but overall tasty. It’s desperately, desperately in need of some additional seasoning. I think it could be nice paired with an aioli/alioli but I didn’t have that so it got what I did have which was a squeeze of Kewpie mayo and some sriracha. Served with a side salad, probably more of a lunchy vibe, but a decent enough dinner.
I don’t know if I’d rush back for more, especially after recently learning this microwave omelet trick from Jose Andres. (It works very well, and combined with his other famous hack – to use salt and vinegar chips instead of chopping up a potato – one can make a debatably better tortilla espanola than the TJ’s version, in about 5 minutes flat. I do recommend lightly torching the top when it’s done for a bit of color.)
