She has tried quite a few but not by any means an exhaustive list. She hasn’t been to flushing for example.
Individual pots would be nice, but the tables are already pretty tight. I was in constant fear of stabbing the person next to me with my chopstick.
This is a plus, according to me. I believe bbq and hotpot should be two separate meals.
Other random info: You will be offered a plastic bag to store your outerwear. If you have long hair, you will be offered a hair tie. Repeatedly. Until you accept.
if you pay cash, you get extra dessert options.
when we used to have group business lunches in ktown, they offered bags for our suit jackets due to the bbq smoke emenating from the grill at our table. Why bags for outerwear at a hot pot?
it’s odd i can eat fairly spicy solid food but spicy broth has me in bed for an ugly, ugly day or two. medicinal bone broth sounds boring tastewise?
I really enjoyed the curry broth at Hometown, though it’s probably not traditional.
that does sound delicious!
Your guess is as good as mine. I’m also capable of engaging in hotpot without dipping my hair in the broth.
I think the only other time I was offered a covering for my coat was at a memorial service for Nick Tosches, which was held at some cigar bar in (of course) the financial district. So necessary. I wish I’d worn a shower cap.
I was agitating for the Tom Yum broth, but no one would get on board.
What were the other choices?
Even in Manhattan, many Sichuan places have a pick-your-poison dry pot. Blue Willow, for example, does a nice job.
There were probably 20+ options. The menu is on an iPad. It goes on for days.
Other than the geoduck, was everything part of the AYCE price? Like the crab and scallops and langoustines? That’s a pretty good deal.
Yes. The “special” items, in addition to the geoduck, were lobster and oysters and like that. Here, finally found their IG.

It’s an amazing deal.
if a friend wants me at their memorial service, they know better than to request a cigar bar, a hard, red line that I’ll never cross.
I’d never been to one, now I have, I’m done. I smoked for a very long time, and cigarette smoke doesn’t bother me much, but cigar smoke, hoo boy.
i took her to hui last year, she didn’t like the dry pot one bit. I thought it delicious. As an aside, she had Jianbing in manhattan’s chinatown and said other than being egg heavy, it was very good.
I’d guess the midtown places catering to the Bank of China and Chinese Consulate might be more to her liking.
My personal rating of disgusting:
Cigars > cigarillos > cigarettes > weed > pipe tobacco, which can almost smell pleasant (depending on the tobacky, of course).
And I still occasionally sneak a cig, but loathe the taste & smell. That shit lingers forever, but nothing is as disgusting as cigar smoke ![]()

A $16 medium lunch plate (that I think weighs more than I do - should’ve got the small) from Debe Kitchen, a Trinidadian place on Nostrand. Rice & beans, spinach, shrimp and chickpeas. Very filling (obviously), and pretty good. The chickpeas were especially fine, with a smoky flavor, but the spinach was too salty for me, and the shrimp were overcooked, as is the Caribbean custom. Lots of choices at this friendly, bright spot, but don’t get your heart set on anything from the online menu, ‘cause it bore no relation to what I found when I got there.
