2025 Superb Owl Foods

Didn’t the mayors of the cities rival teams bet their city’s representative food dish against each other in years past? Do they still do that? I think I remember a po’boy and chili bet one year.
We don’t ‘do’ stupid bowl anymore, it has been a long time. In years past our plates would runneth over with the big half-time meals of chili with all the accoutrements or a decadent deep dish lasagne for 30. There were no snackies other than chips and salsa, 7 layer or onion dip. The beverages were the big draw, I suppose: kegs and lots and lots of bottles of booze and the plethora of mixers and blenders.
I lost my prized ficus plant to an idiot who dumped his Long Island Iced Tea into it, rather than pouring it out in the sink. That was the last party we hosted, #XXII. After that came the kids and we had to ‘adult up’.:astonished:

Usually, we just use it as an excuse to eat junk, heavy on dips and cheese, for dinner. This year, DH is in full Fly Eagles Fly mode (we lived in greater Philadelphia from 2006-2015) and DS is going to a friend’s for the game, so dinner will be Philly cheesesteak mac and cheese and Italian chopped salad.

I hope everyone will post photos of their Super Bowl Foods.

I’m going into this weekend craving cheesesteaks, Chinese food, and Yorkshire Pudding.

Thank you!

This sounds great. I won’t make it bc we’re not hosting anyone tonight, but perhaps for a future gathering.

DH made a chicken curry, which was much appreciated after the snow shoveling, with TJ’s naan and tzatziki. Although I was wondering what owl wing recipes might show up.
Watching more for the commercials than the game. Did catch the Puppy Bowl earlier.

I thought about Kansas City Ribs, when I ordered my Montreal Honey Garlic Ribs tonight.

Serious Eats’ baking powder prep method for chicken wings, with an oven roast at 450° until crispy, then glazing the last 15 minutes of baking with a spicy apricot sauce from Food & Wine.

Gingered Coleslaw (with extra red cabbage and grated carrots) and Carrot-Raisin Salad. Similar salad, but didn’t want potato salad or deviled eggs, or anything else.

There was wine.

Dessert was a slice of pear-ginger brown butter tart I got at Pizzelle’s bakery in Lowell yesterday, with a small scoop of Gifford’s Salted Vanilla Toffee ice cream.

We were on the same page, although we followed the NYT recipe that also had you use baking powder. First batch was a bit anemic,

second batch was better,

but we were already pretty stuffed at that point. Frank’s srsly HAWT  Nashville sauce & Frank’s hot & extra hot sauces with melted butter were our sauces of choice.

Celery and my PIC’s delish blue cheese dip for our veg

My PIC’s spekuloos ice cream if it’s done before we hit the sack

Football? What football?

As a Niners fan I’m rooting for both teams to lose. Maybe rooting for the Chiefs to lose a bit more.

Anyway I’m having some rye crispbread topped with boiled eggs, marinated herring in mustard sauce, red onion, and crème fraîche.

Me too, except I always root for the NFC team. eta: except for the Cowboys. I really wanted the Chiefs to lose. Thank you Eagles, you were super…b!
I found chili con frijoles and cornbread in the freeze, seemed Superb Owl appropriate. Avocado and radishes.

We squished nine people into our modestly sized living room and stuffed them full of snacks. Chips and onion dip, other chips and guac and salsa, panzanella, shrimp cocktail, potato salad. Hummus and crudite, kombu celery. Gray owl, Vermont shepherd, crackers, cheetos, and the obligatory cheese football.

The game went as we hoped.

Yay Puppy Bowl! I could binge watch.

There’s next year when the Stoopid Bowl moves to Levi’s Stadium. Maybe the home team will play!

We didn’t watch the game, but an ad on YouTube popped up on a video my partner and I were watching. Namely, this one:

We hit that “Seal as seal” moment and my partner looked over at me with a distraught expression and whimpered “No! I am not ok with this!”

I concur. This is the video equivalent stumbling on your parents’ amateur boudoir Polaroids.

If I drank Mtn Dew, I might boycott them just for this.

I watched the NYT 25 “best.” I liked the sloth one the best, probably.

None of them were particularly good, and the Seal one was one of the worst. Yikes.

Yeah, this one squicked me out when I saw it. Same for the Tubi flesh-cowboy hat one.

I liked the Michelob Ultra with Willem Dafoe and Catherine O’Hara playing pickleball. Also, the breast cancer awareness one tugged at the heartstrings. The Stella Artois with David Beckham and Matt Damon as “Other David” made me laugh and was my favorite. When asked if Beckham was Matt Damon famous, Beckham replies “Well, Ben Affleck famous.” Damon’s dry “huh. That’s a shame.” at the end was perfect.
