2019 veggie gardens

Still think I should have a tomato stand
Came back from airport, picked up son who was away for 17 days.
I had been harvesting his tomatoes etc , gave some away Monday and this morning
Also discovered that aside from 4 french beans plans at the edge of the pool room, there are 1 other plants along the 50 foot flat roof of swimming pool which I had not seen until last Saturday. I guess it has automatic sprinkler but really do not know what they are as there is a 2.5 foot-3 foot gap between my berm and pool roof.
I was letting a neighbor harvest the beans at the edge of the pool accessible from my porch while he was gone, as I need a step stool to reach them, afraid I might fall so told neighbor it is hers for the taking.
Here is what he picked, tomatoes, after I. harvested and gave a bag away this morning. There is another table of sweet red pepper but I think he had already froze them. These tomatoes are waiting to dry to be frozen!
PS" I developed allergy to tomato leaves and so is a bit timid harvesting them .
Something is wrong, uploading failed X3. Will try later.
This is my 5th try, will post with pictures Is it my computer?

had problem uploading pictures.
these are tomatoes harvested since Thursday.
butternut squash starting to come up, zucchini also started again after a month ( trimmed the dead lives etc), the shishito peppers are still good, but takes about a week with 2 plants to be enough for me to stir fry a bowlful. I am not sure what to do with all these tomatoes, freezer full of frozen ones to be cooked as tomato sauce for spaghetti etc.

SUCCESS!!!

You have a farm! How many tomato plants have your son planted? And since when?

Lovely table too.

just counted, there are 12 regular tomato plants ( red , orange and purple Cherokee. The latter are not producing now). There are also 6 cherry tomato plants that was dry reductive but slowing now. They are watered with a timer, 2-3 X a day and are planted in cloth grow bags. However, when he was away, I watered the when the temp reached over 100 degrees as I do not want to mess up his watering system,. I would like some chinese chives, leek, Ong Chay ( chinese version of spinach). He has never done any gardening until now. He drove to Pennsylvania to buy 16- 4 year old plants ( strawberry, blackberry, raspberry and blueberries) but they have very little fruits. Then we drove to an orchard and bought Meyer lemon tree as well as asian pear tree. ( He was bitten by a dog when we were there). It is producing some fruits now. Wants us to plant some more fruit trees but I am afraid I am too tired. Where he wanted them is on the far north but I have rare Japanese maple trees there and promised my husband that I would trim those trees so that neighbors can still have view of waterfront . I hope that someday he would eventually take over the garden as I am too old and tired. Had asked someone to come and cut down some locust shrubs but he never showed up. Labor is very expensive and unavailable. All they want to do is mow the lawn. Our county is difficult. Once a small plant becomes a shrub or a tree, we are not allowed to chop it. The fine is very stiff as much as 10,000 for a tree.

It’s been a slow year for tomatoes outside cherries, but I did harvest these beauties today. They’re from a Cherokee Carbon plant I picked up at Love Apple Farms.

I notice this everywhere, even places in warmer climate. Our first tomatoes (cherries only), we are August 15.

Just put a bunch of seeds in soil for autumn, winter crops, including Chinese cabbage, pai tsai, water spinach, greens for salad, cauliflowers, red cabbage herbs like parsley, coriander, spring onion, basil… Some seeds are old, so I don’t expect everything will germinate…

With the warm weather, the pace has really picked up, as has the quality. I’m picking a few of the full-sized ones each day, sometimes more. And for once, I can pull the tomatoes at or close to ripeness off the vine thanks to less vicious squirrels this year.

I wouldn’t put the taste at 9/10 yet, but it’s a solid 8/10 at this point and plentiful. We’ll see if the tomatoes continue to improve.

Beauties! What kind are those? Looks like Cherokee Purple, but I guess slot of purple tomatoes do. I grow Rosella Purpose, which is a “dwarf” version.

Oh! They must be the Cherokee Carbon.

Yeah, they are Cherokee Carbon.

Finally some good tomatoes! I wonder every year if I’ll get enough sun because of the ever growing neighbor trees. And first year with the soybeans. Someone really liked biting the seedlings off when they were about 3” tall. I kept replanting and using chicken wire and have about 8 plants with lots of edemame! Had the first bowl yesterday. A bit smaller than restaurant version but very sweet and delicious.

Never thought of that, will try it next year if I can find the seeds or plants.

I seem to be surrendering this year’s figs to the birds. :frowning:

H

ere is end of season tomatoes, to be pickled as we did love those pickled green tomatoes earlier . All plants taken out for compost except for fruits( strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries that my son drove all the way to Pennsylvania for. They were 4 year old plants but hardly any fruit to speak of. He wants to transplant them into the ground.

Harvest is coming in big time here. The grafted heirloom, antique Italian tomatoes get picked every couple days.

Lots of Ausilio Thin-skinned Italian peppers. Sweet with just a little heat>

Will try to upload some other unusual veggie pictures: Giant Lima beans, Tindora, Peruvian peppers and more. I’m processing like crazy!
