Youtube ads ruining my favorite food vlogs

(post deleted by author)

You might want to spend a little time searching: online (or digital) advertising vs traditional advertising to learn how they work. It’s too lengthy to explain here. Lots of good resources out there.

The same exact commercials run on youtube, as run on my local FOX affiliate that I pick up OTA with my exterior antenna.

Some examples – Febreeze plug in add, Cadillac commercial and a local RV dealer – just to name a few.

I’m not including a certain local political ad that plays ad nauseam for a politician running for Congress - both venues (exactly same ad),

I see no difference.

It’s not the content of the ads that is the differentiating factor.

It’s how you the viewer engages with those ads.

On OTA TV, you are a captive audience. If you were say to be watching your live local news at 10 p.m., you can’t just just skip the ad, or install an ad blocker, you have to sit through the entire commercial break to then watch the rest the news broadcast. Hence, the ā€œteaseā€ that all shows have.

On YouTube or Netflix, or whatever, or any other on-demand streaming service, you the viewer have either (1) the option to skip the ad or (2) bypass it entirely by paying for a premium tier.

On YouTube, to use that as an example, quantity matters more than quality of ads because of the ability of the viewer to skip the entirety of the ad, or to manipulate the timing of the ads, so just having the viewer get even a glimpse or sound of the product is enough, without having to watch or hear the entirety of the ad (unlike on OTA TV where they have a captive audience, by comparison).

That’s all I am going to say on this topic.

If you don’t enjoy ads on YouTube, please feel free to log off.

Nope. Some YouTube content contains unskippable ad blocks that are usually about 3 minutes long. You can tell this because there’s a countdown timer in the upper left of the screen. No skip option. I find this most prevalent on the car restoration shows that I watch. In a 60-minute show the blocks can happen as often as every 10 minutes and most of the spots in the blocks are identical. I’ve never found the content compelling enough to upgrade to Premium though.

Wrong premises in both situations. For OTA - We all know how long those ads are and use the time with TV sound muted to get a snack, brush teeth, listen to music with headphones, read a few pages, pay bills, etc., etc. etc.

"On YouTube or Netflix, or whatever, or any other on-demand streaming service, you the viewer have either (1) the option to skip the ad " - NOT currently the case for longer ads, which is exactly why I started this discussion.

Downloading the app Duck Duck Go to use as a browser will eliminate a great deal of ad and sponsorship ads. They have a ā€œfireproofā€ feature that allows you to identify specific sites/pages you prefer as ad less as possible. Their Privacy Pro is what you want

funny discussion, it is . . .

flashback to the 1980’s - ā€œcableā€ is coming to town!! all you favorite shows, no ads!!!
how’s that working out now . . . ?

2001 when we moved in here it was splendid - upgraded from dial up to cable internet.
$30 per month - internet and tv - unencrypted cable tv - the computer could record any show you wanted … plug in any /as many your want tvs to the cable&watch.

today? $250 per month, encrypted tv, can record nothing except u$ing Comcast device.
no new email accounts permitted on @comcast.net
one free tuner, every tuner for every additional tv cost$;
$2x/month for providing (free) public broadcast tv programs;
$16/month for ā€œlocal sports coverageā€;
no opt out options.

anything ā€œstreamingā€ is an obvious ā€œmore costā€ thing . . .
except for Amazon Prime - and Amazon is shifting/changing all that every month.

Yes, absolutely frustrating. Another way to deal with this is to use YouTube’s premium service, which offers an ad-free experience. If that’s not an option, you could also try downloading videos for offline viewing, which typically bypasses ads…

Spurred on by this thread, I’ve subscribed to youtube premium… :upside_down_face: Incredibly expensive here in Europe, I pay 16.95 euro per month! By comparison, amazon prime is 5.99 and hbo max 4.99. Spotify and netflix around 10 euro each I believe.

But so far I notice I’m watching way more youtube than before. No annoying ads anymore, just watch whatever you want and when. I can now also play youtube in the background of my ipad, so for example checking something out quickly on safari with the youtube video continue playing. Not sure if I’ll keep it, but this is very addictive. I’m now trying to also test youtube music as an alternative to spotify. Will report back in a month or so.

YouTubeMusic only seems to have ā€œnormalā€ music, nothing of the weird and obscure. At least I couldn’t find any.

This is what @damiano and I are talking about.
All the wild and obscure has been eliminated.

Yeah, I was just giving a shameless plug for my niece :grin:

LOVE. IT. Is your niece the singer?

PS: Hope you don’t get flagged for ā€œshilling.ā€ :wink:

Eh, the video is free, so not technically shilling. Just blatant family promotion.

Yep, she’s the singer (now going by an assumed last name as hers is too long?) and a drummer by trade. I have asked her mom (my sis) if she plans to do anything a little more upbeat :crazy_face:

That’s my band members all the fucking time :rofl:

Your niece is great. Does she tour the northeast at all? I seem to recall you mentioning she’s on the other side of the country.

Thanks. Her music isn’t really in my wheelhouse, but I admire her dedication. I’m not sure where the haunted themes come from. I guess tortured poets are in :woman_shrugging:

She does live in Colorado, but she tours all over. Besides Banshee Tree, she also tours with Lindsay Lou (?) and is now branching out to some solo stuff. She was in Philly over the winter and NJ last month, But she seems to spend most of her time in CO\OR\CA\ID.
