I knew something had happened to the NYT Food writer Yewande Komolafe but I didn’t realise it was so severe. I couldn’t find an elaboration in the article, just a mention of the fact she didn’t get the care she needed and ended up in intensive care with a need for extensive amputations. I am in awe of her resilience in the face of such life-changing health issues.
I noticed that as well! I can’t wrap my head around the fact that sickle cell is, or maybe can still be such a beast.
Cold weather can really be dangerous for persons affected by sickle cell disease. I noted her severe episode was in the month of December in NYC.
Thank you! . I worked in pediatrics in New york for years, but that was in the 80’s!
I might have been your patient in that era (I was living in Kansas City though) ! I trained in general paediatrics in London in the early 2000s and saw many patients with SCD come through the emergency room.
Wow. Back then.…but that’s not about food.
an amazing story, that includes a recipe i can’t wait to try:
brown butter cornmeal cake, though i’ll reduce the sugar.
I felt full of compassion and awe to read this. She is still cooking! I have saved all of her recipes to my NYT account.
I was wondering whether she can’t say more because of the terms of a settlement, which I hope would be for an enormous amount of money. Far too many Black women don’t get the care they need, for a wide range of medical issues.
