It’s a few years since we were last in the Paphos area. And a holiday here would not be the same without a meal at Seven Saint Georges – even though, this time, our hotel stay was “all inclusive”. There’s a new generation of the family now in charge – one brother is the chef, the other runs front of house with the sort of hospitality for which the Eastern Mediterranean is rightly famous. Little else has changed.
Food is still a mezze and dishes will keep coming until you tell them to stop. We managed to eat for a couple of hours before we had to call a halt. And, even then, we were urged to try just one more dish. So we did – a fine example of stifado. Before that, there had been an array of dips and salads – amongst them the likes of tahini dip, aubergine salad, spicy feta cheese and village salad. There there’s other meat dishes – like chicken and lamb kleftiko (the latter so much better than the version of the Cypriot restaurant near home). The moussaka seemed different from the usual. We asked and had it confirmed that it was actually meat free and used small lentils in its place. And sweet potato replaced ordinary spuds. Memorable. After maybe fifteen different dishes, it’s perhaps needless to say, we were too stuffed to consider dessert.
I don’t usually mention prices in reviews. They are what they are. But, at only €25 each, this was bargain food by any standard. Lovely evening.
Oh, yes, just one final thought about something that hasn’t changed. It’s still a place to avoid if you are “feline phobic”. On the other hand, “childless cat ladies” will probably love it. Yes, there are a lot of cats.
