Wing Hing, Aberdeen/Matawan

Wing Hing is one of those mostly-take-out, freezing-in-winter, strip mall Chinese restaurants. Nevertheless, they used to do basic Chinese food fine. The problem is they keep jumping on whatever the current bandwagon is. Their latest addition is a Szechuan/Hunan section of the menu, which Mark wanted to try. I warned him…

We got Shrimp with Szechuan Sauce. It was 8 reasonable-sized shrimp, some chunks of green pepper, and a lot of diced onion in what seemed to be a ketchup-based sauce, more sweet than hot.

Fool me once, …

(Oh, in the window they advertise “Fish & Chips”–the picture shows fried fish and crinkle-cut French fries. How very Chinese…)

I suppose they know what they’re doing–they’ve been around for ages–but I wish they would stick to what they do well.

Okay, this thread is ten years old, but what the heck.

Wing Hing has revamped its menu. It has eliminated lunch specials, though the basic Chinese dishes do come in small and large portions, and they have dishes over rice which come with either white or fried rice. They added pan-fried noodles, which I love, but alas, they noodles were not very crispy at all; it seemed more like mei fun.

Maybe I’ll go back in another ten years.

(They did add a vestibule since I was last there–at least if I remember the lay-out from before. And they’re closed Wednesdays.)
