What's so special about Sauls in Berkeley

To understand Saul’s you need to understand that is a real community restaurant. Saul’s is around the corner from the JCC and is the “living room” for its north Berkeley neighborhood. Its the people and community feeling that will take you home at Saul’s not the amount fat in the pastrami. The East Bay is deeply enriched by New York transplants who often complain as Californians for 20+ years that the Bay Area isn’t New York. “Oy its so pretty here I can’t think and write my new book.” Those ex-pat complaints are embedded in Saul’s tradition too. Nostalgia is a very difficult flavor. Even the New York deli isn’t the New York deil anymore. It the warmth of a community that’s special here. Try the deli hash in morning, have a nosh, and kvetch with a friend. Please tip the wait staff. They’ve got a lot riding on their shoulders.

That was eloquently stated. Thanks.

Sorry to report that you still can’t get a tongue sandwich there. The saving grace is the full liquor license.
