I’m so glad that Sunshine is doing well. She is so lucky to have a loving and caring partner like you. I wish her a speedy recovery.
I’m glad you could make that choice.
That’s tough. We see you.
Thanks @tomatotomato and @Meekah. I know I’m very lucky to be able to access options to get back home amidst the turmoil.
I was gobsmacked there was no delay to one of my siblings’ BOM-LON flight the morning after things started. Perhaps the flight path out of Mumbai being more southern as it is (due to required avoidance of Ukraine and Israel flight spaces for the past few years) meant a slight detour further south to avoid newly affected flight spaces wouldn’t require much more fuel from Mumbai, vs from Delhi or Kolkata (where apparently it has added 2 hours flight time and an additional fueling stop for flights to the west coast of the US).
Still, it was very stressful to have someone in transit in the immediate aftermath. We are also waiting to hear from family in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Oman.
Good luck and safe travels.
I’m back in the UK now, in time for my on-call starting tomorrow morning! Feel quite relieved to have made it back in time with no major disruption on the alternative route.
Whew, how glad I am to hear you are back. What a journey that must have been.
Great news
Excellent! I hate to fly even under normal circumstances. I would have needed someone to hit me with a tranquilizer dart ….
So glad you got out and are back home safe!
I don’t know if I’m posting this in the right place – but here goes…
I’ve been hearing more and more about California Law AB 1043 that goes into effect 01-01-27. It is an age verification for your operating system. Apparently, it is to protect under age children from getting to certain areas of the internet, but at the “Operating System” level.
I have no idea how Windows or Apple are going to implement this. Personally, I’m moving everything to Linux and I’ll jump to a distro that isn’t going to collect my birth date, location, etc. Some distros are saying they’ll ban residents from California from downloading their operating system. Other developers are trying to come up with changes to the operating system code that force you to verify your age – for everyone, not just California residents.
I’m just suspicious as to who is going to collect this data, how secure is its storage, who will have access to it and what happens when it gets hacked.
Back from seeing mom. The nurse was in the room when I walked in. Mom says to me “Oh! Hello! I’m so happy to see you!” Turns to the nurse, pointing at me, “This is my… … friend.” I say “Hi. Mom.”
As the therapists work with her to get her to stand and walk, she complains that it hurts (naturally) but still complies. You can see her get upset and overwhelmed, and the therapist stalls her for 5-10 seconds until she forgets that she’s upset and wonders why her leg hurts, at which point they get her to take another couple of steps.
I find it darkly fascinating to contemplate one’s existence limited to a 10 second window on either side of ‘now’.
Her insurance eval is March 9. They will either authorize more time in rehab or give her a 72 hour discharge notice, which we can appeal. Her living facility also has to assess her before she’s permitted to return to make sure she’ll still be within their care standards, if we’ll need to hire extra caretakers, etc. I hate that her living situation is dependent on actuarial tables, as opposed to, you know, her actual health needs. Fuck this legal grift of a “system.”
All of this will be occurring while I’m out of the country. I am wholly confident in my family and others in the area to handle things in my absence, but I fret nonetheless.
Also ended up having to get a new phone last minute, which meant dealing with AT&T, which is actually WORSE than dealing w health insurance companies.
Having dealt with very similar stuff with my mom in 2023, I understand what you’re going through. The German system is, of course, a million times better than the shit show in this underdeveloped country, but facilities with memory care units are still not cheap.
Wishing you and your mom the best possible outcome, given the circumstances.
Wonderful news. Hope you have a restful sleep tonight to help you gear back up for work tomorrow!
Ugh. So sorry to read this. Hopefully your family members keep you UTD as often as possible so you know how Mom is doing.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts and wishes around my travel issues
.
Somehow this cartoon just gets more and more relevant.
Every fucking day.
This is on my mind now. Not good. J.F.C.
