What's on your mind? (2025) - good way to start... even if a bit early... :-)

My groan is currently headed west on the turnpike. You should hear it in about two hours.

I’ve got 2.5(*) that def need to come down (oaks), at least one leg of a 3-part river birch leaning way out over the neighbor’s drive that needs to go, and one monster twin trunk hickory (I think) that I’ll ask the guy about - it’s got a big hollow area between the two trunks from about ground to 5 feet up. Big enough for a 10-12 year old to hide in, whereas the two used to be together all the way to the ground.

Of course, asking the opinion guy quoting the job is like asking the fox to guard the henhouse. Or “to a man with a saw, everything looks like a tree that needs to come down”.

(*) The half tree is the remainder of the trunk (about 30 feet) after the other 30-ish feet of it came down and smashed my fence. I slept through the storm (usually do) and didn’t hear it fall (also, it’s about 100 feet away from the house). I found out when the dogs showed up on the front porch, instead of the back deck, after their morning duties. At least chain saw rental at HD is pretty cheap!

Anyway, I’m guessing this job might be $6K or so? I had 5 big pines taken down a couple of years ago (plus some other large limbs taken down that were too near the house) for about $3K, but all the pines were outside the fenced area so I saved money by not making them haul those away.

I had a twin trunk ash tree in front of my house that I knew had to come down. Well we had a winter full of high winds. I heard something, looked out front and yep, it had come down. Talk about luck. It came up root ball and all, blocked the driveway and the front lawn. It missed the garage, the house, even the mailbox. The tree guy was impressed. I think the estimate I had to remove it was about $2K. The cost to remove it and fill in the hole in the yard was $1300. So the wind saved me $700. (Thankfully the car was in the garage, not the drive.)

Here they are taking the last one down. Its equally grand partner stood in front of my bedroom windows. I watched it topple over, slowly, during a thunderstorm. All of the big oaks died, one by one, never to be replaced.

My township has lots of old trees, but loses several every season: they either fall over or are taken down before they fall. But they have a good approach to replacing them. Every arbor day they give away free trees, one per household. I don’t get one every year, but my young red maple and birch are courtesy of the township. I’m thinking of getting a magnolia this year as two neighbors have them and they’re thriving nicely.

Just finished watching the national news on ABC. I went into the kitchen to start prepping my dinner.
I then heard music come on for the next show and immediately ran to my phone and began texting my sister.

Moments later before my text was done, my phone rang and it was her. When I picked up I just screamed “The Ten Commandments” is on right now!" She yelled back “I KNOW!!!”

This is one of the shows we’d be allowed to stay up past our bedtime to watch (along with The Wizard of Oz", “Sound of Music”, and the TV version of “Cinderella”) when we were kids.

Cheesy, but a family tradition.

Not for nothing, if you have need of some high quality field binoculars, I have a spare pair of my father’s. That I’ll let go for a pittance. We’ll… let’s call it a pittance and a half.

American Shad should be entering the American and Sac right about now. You ever fly fish for them, or just C&R trout?

Smoked shad is delicious.

One of these days shad . Ill have to travel from the upper sac to the lower for shad . I would love it . On my bucket list . Smoked shad sounds delicious.
Im on the lookout for a old metal fridge . Turn that into a cold smoker . Pot belly stove and horizontal flue . My father was a master at cold smoking steelhead. He said never get above 80 degrees.

Thank you! Those binoculars sound pretty special.

I rarely see the birds when I hear them, but I saw one today!

I have some that I think I got for skywatching/stargazing many moons ago :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

… but I am no judge. What makes binoculars “high quality”?

Also son just gave husband these for an upcoming whale watching trip.

The 8X and 10X stand for max magnification power. The other number is the large lens diameter. They’re Swift Optics.

These were my dads. He’s also got an old 60’s vintage Bausch & Lomb pair that we took to Cubs games and such. I’m keeping those.

That’s funny. When I heard what was coming up next after the news, I ran for my remote to make sure I didn’t catch a moment of “The Ten Commandments” :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: It seemed like a good time to catch up on TC\LCK.

Shad are a lot of fun to catch, but man, are they bony, bony, bony! The last time I went shad fishing was before I got a pressure canner, and we gave our catch to some guys that canned them. I imagine smoking might take care of the bones in much the same way that canning does. Sadly, my fishing buddy is no longer, and I’m not sure can manage a trip without him.
