What's on your mind? (2025) - good way to start... even if a bit early... :-)

Never let the bullies win. Unfortunately, they won, and are encouraged in continuing their rampage. It’s quite disheartening.

Be the best friend you can be, it is needed.

On Monday I took a daylong break from social media, specifically anything Meta. I haven’t done this ever.

It was extremely freeing, and now I have a lot to consider.

That’s pretty diabolical and the lowest.

I wore a black braided hair tie 8 years ago, removed it in 2021, and put it back on after the RvW scotus decision. I guess it’ll stay on for at least 4 more years. :persevere:

I deleted my FB account, FB Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram 11 days ago. I deleted my Twitter account yesterday.

I used to have trouble staying off Facebook 15 years ago. I must have deactivated my accounts 8 times and deleted it thrice.

I had quit for 3 months in 2019.

I started a new FB account in late Dec 2019, when a friend died and I wanted people in my ski club to know about the visitation and the funeral. Whoever was handling emails to the membership had not sent the information out despite a few requests, and I didn’t want people to miss the visitation. I kept my account active during a trip to Japan, then I found my network growing again during the beginning of the Pandemic.

I relied on social media a lot during the lockdowns.

I am glad that I quit FB when I did. I don’t need to see people’s updates.

I’m tired of being sent memes and reels from people who don’t ask you how you’re doing or answer how they’re doing if you ask them how they’re doing.

I did cut off a lot of connections who mostly used WhatsApp and Messenger, but they know where to find me if they really need to be in touch.

That was one of my ‘resolutions’ for the year. Looks like I might find it easier & easier, the way things have been going.

I don’t know if this place counts as social media, but other than here and a few reddits where I have enough knowledge to help answer people’s questions, I’ve never had any.

I didn’t even do LinkedIn because I was happy with my job. And when that became the major recruiting tool, recruiters forgot about using the USPTO listings to find people. So I was happy to have the recruiting calls dry up, too.

My wife and 4 adult kids use snapchat to send stuff to each other and friends, but that and LinkIn (all 4 kids have that) are about it.

This place counts as social media for me, but it might not, to others.

This place is a virtual water cooler.

I can see someone who is married with kids and a full time job not having time or use for social media.

For people who are more isolated or travel a lot, with less friends and family around, the social media helps fill a void.

I met some good friends through Twitter and Facebook. I found my dog through a Facebook group. It definitely has some pros and cons.

Ignorance is bliss. Self imposed news blackout. If an asteroid is heading towards the earth I would appreciate a heads up. My only social media is HO and Instagram which is 90% food related and family. Can it last 4 years? I doubt it.

I have no social media whatsoever… Never had it – never will. I have no desire to hear from people from my past. No desire to attend high school or college reunions or anything along those lines. And I NEVER want to hear from ex-girlfriends!!

I’ve never had Linked-In, either. When I worked, I had a “head hunter” that would place me. She had this uncanny ability to know when I wanted a change and would contact me with the next opportunity / job.

The people I call “friend” have my land line and will call me and I call them. I consider “friends” to be people I have “broke bread” with; they are welcome in my home and vice-versa.

I don’t really consider Hungry Onion social media as we are anonymous. Although a few posters are OK posting pictures (of themselves) the majority do not. If I passed any of you on the street, I would not know who you are.

The key thing for me with HO is that there isn’t enough stimulus (repeated, extremely frequent updates) to make it addictive.

That’s what is problematic to me about IG. It’s a TORRENT of new shit every five seconds, every two seconds. The dopamine/cortisol dysfunction is intense. And that’s agnostic of the other negative aspect, the content itself. Even though I’ve curated heavily.

I was talking about my news blackout lasting 4 years, but thank you for the uplifting news.

Nah, it’s “layman medical opinion”, not political commentary.

Oh! LoL.

That’s why I could never get into TikTok. I still don’t know how it works, exactly.

And I usually forget that I am even on IG. I check it maybe ever 3 months or so, and will find ancient msgs from friends who are far more active on there :grimacing:
