What's On Your Mind 2023

Being able to edit what you share is pretty awesome. That is not usually available in real life. This is an amazing community.

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was an ā€œeditā€ button in real life?

Oh Dear Lard, Yes! So many times in life that I’ve said something poorly to someone, which I wish I could have said better or more clearly.

An ā€œeditā€ button for life would be a greatest gift!

Or an ignore/mute button.

If the programmers are smart enough to make one for Discourse, there should be one by now for real life!

Oh, I was mostly kidding. Free will, healthy boundaries & focusing on the people who bring us joy is pretty effective, even IRL

Hasn’t the smartphone become a type of edit button?

People who don’t want to communicate stop responding to texts or don’t return calls. Or reply with " I’m so busy/ I’m so tired". Or leave mid-conversation during a text conversation not to return.

My new Google Pixel phone does this:

(My Uncle isn’t being passive aggressive, I’m sure he will write at some point )

Mother pretended to have one as we noisily marched through the house :trumpet:

Looks like I’ve jinxed us. Tonight while i was here he picked up the mat and shook it, and gobbled the kibble. But didn’t choke or throw it up.

P.S. i got here about 4 pm and tried the newer methods of nipping abatement for about 2 hours with no effect. Then I went back to the old methods for 20 minutes. He’s not attempted to nip either of us in the 4 hours since then, despite a lot of play including tug-of-war type stuff. And he’s not skittish or afraid of me.

What would you guys buy an 85 year old lady for her birthday? Would prefer non-food and non-booze ideas, and I have given her kitchen gadgets, dish towels and fragranced soap quite a few times.
I already have Xmas foods for her Xmas present (home-made fruitcake, a can of duck rillettes, a can of foie gras pâté, and a tray with mixed pralines). Thanks for any ideas!

Flowers, luxury body lotion, gift certificate for a massage if you know her well enough to know she would enjoy it and where she would want one.

Does she have a favorite author?? Maybe a book??

Last year I purchased a book for my Mom (similar in age to your friend) about the Moon Landing. She loved it!!

Not sure about favourite author, she often gives my parents gift certificates for the bookstore! Good idea!

Thanks, I think she would like flowers. Thanks for all the ideas.

If she’s nearby, I’d give her a gift of time. Time spent together, time playing a game, a play, a show, gardening.

Budget? If she doesn’t have an e-reader, maybe one of those with a lesson to connect to the library system (there’s a wide price range these days, so you can skew inexpensive or spendy).

Otherwise maybe some nice-smelling hand cream that’s a bit more luxurious than normal (last year I found a Tocca set for stockings). I would have suggested CBD cream for aches and pains, but while very useful, it doesn’t exactly scream birthday :joy:

I am amazed by how few people use the library for digital content. Otherwise frugal people I know ignore my tips on what is available. It is a resource I pay for with my tax dollars. It is a valuable resource and one I am proud to say I use almost every day.

Thank you!
Many do not know that libraries are not just all about books or somewhere to take the kids for a storytime. Libraries are your portal to all the information you will ever need out there in the world. So many resources can come from your public library to you.
Books on tape, CD or downloadable materials can be had for the ownership of a library card. Most libraries share with a consortium of others within their state. Currently I read books on my Kindle and just yesterday, I borrowed a copy of the current ā€˜Cooks Illustrated’ for 14 days to peruse. BTW, there are some recipes I’m going to make that I found in there (one is a Sengalese chicken recipe similar to Chicken Yassa).
As a retired librarian, I will continue to sing the praises of our public libraries and the services they provide to all of us! Give them a try!
