What's On Your Mind 2023

Our city council in London, Ontario was polarized about fireworks. We have lost a lot of forest and farmland due to new neighborhoods being built , because we have a new housing crisis partly due to a huge number of refugees and immigrants.

The wildlife have retreated into the city’s ravines. I have heard the coyote kits in the forest yelping after fireworks have gone off. My dog used to be too petrified to pee, and the fireworks would last for hours. I can’t imagine how veterans with PTSD or gunshot victims must feel.

Meanwhile, over the last 4 years, as many newcomers moved to London ON from abroad or from Toronto, the new families buying houses off empty nesters, as well buying new starter homes , have been setting off fireworks year-round.

The last 4 years, there have been more fireworks taking place on Diwali, NYE and Chinese New Year, but they were also going off on random weeknights.

In Canada, fireworks are typically only set off for Victoria Day in May and Canada Day in July. Usually, one cannot even purchase fireworks from August to April.

One group of concerned citizens has been trying to get fireworks banned completely. Up until now, it has been illegal to set off fireworks in the fall and winter, but it hasn’t been enforced.

Instead, our council decided to set our hours for Diwali and Chinese New Year fireworks. It worked out okay yesterday, all the fireworks ended by 11 pm.

Hadn’t thought about the firework celebrations and effect on wildlife. I was only viewing it from a human multicultural standpoint.

Many thanks for posting this insight.

FWIW, I’d have probably been more tuned in to the animal side of it if my dog weren’t pretty much deaf. He used to complain but in the last 5 years or so hasn’t even noticed.

Oir ‘city’ can’t figure out what to do, correctly. First they say yes, then no, then only a few days before and after and nonone can keep it straight. I’d love to go way, far away for July 4 but because of the fire danger we stick around. Sonwe continue to either tranquilze the pets or sequester them in an interior closet with everything they need for a few days. Then the blanking neighbors start on June 15 and go through to July 15. No possible way law enforcement can enforce the ‘law du jour’. When the big one comes rolling through and burns down the communities around here, maybe, just maybe they’ll rethink things. But maybe not, because nothing will be left to burn. Definitely Darwin Award nominees.

That doesn’t look like PA to me. And I seriously doubt it’s Munich.

I know I’ve been at that exact beach, but it was 55 years ago and before Kona’s present airport was built. Sooo many beaches do look like that on the islands, tho. Thanks for sharing!

Ew, Munich. Why, never!

I’m one lucky bish to be visiting O’ahu, something I never thought would be possible. And we are leaving tomorrow :sob: :sob: :sob:

Might have to start saving for a trip back to explore some other islands…

I didn’t grow up anywhere near a beach, but I spent many childhood summers traveling the Greek islands. The beach & the ocean are my happy place & always will be. If I’d actually grown up on one I would be a beach bum with a surfboard and no job

I was hoping there’d be more tiki drinks than what we had!!! It’s mostly been G&T&Ss in our villa since they roll up the sidewalks here by 8pm :open_mouth:

I did have an O’ahu colada & a Mai Tai while in HNL. There aren’t a lot of bars/nightlife up on the north shore or at least where we are.

G&Ts work pretty universally . . . especially when relaxing in a tropical villa.

Born a couple of miles from the beach. In my history, all seasons. I love winter on the beach. I remember a friend calling me to ask about a vacation home development she knew was on my home turf, asking particularly about its year around viability. I told her, " I LOVE it in winter! Grey skies, churning surf, screaming seagulls, whooping winds. MAGIC!" Dead silence. Then she replied, “It sounds absolutely ghastly!” To each their own. Summer is great, but its counterpart has its features.

I wouldn’t ever complain about living on or near a beach, regardless of the weather. Tho I am a water rat & not being able to go in would be frustrating.

We body surfed in winter. It usually depended on air temp. NorCal has surprisingly sunny and temperate weather in winter.

Totally agree about the ocean beaches in any season. A dead tie for me between winter and summer, but I especially love a stormy, windy winter vacation at the water. Gloomy, foggy, scenic as hell when you can see. So fun to have a fire & just enjoy being in.

If I were still able to follow my other passion (riding) I might enjoy a wintry beach just as much.

LOL, It is rare to see Salina news (especially when it comes to food), so I made a call. Just in case anyone besides myself wondered why he made that his slogan, my source tells me that there is nothing unusual about the smell. It is a very small place with only a few chairs. It is mostly takeout. They keep the doors open (or at least used to) so we are guessing that, that is where the smell comes from. And the onions. They make white castle style sliders. Anyway, bbqboy, thanks for the laugh.
