What's For Dinner #99 - the Orange is the New Black Edition -October 2023

Sabich Hummus plate and butter bean salad from Parallel Basta in Toronto’s Kensington Market. 152 Augusta Ave

I’m a bit of a Sabich addict. I order it whenever I see it. I’m hoping Parallel Basta might start making a Israeli- style Tunisian tuna bowl, plate or sandwich.

Simmered a family chicken breast pack today for a casserole tomorrow. The rest was made into a chicken salad with chopped apple, dill pickle, jalapeño, mayo, s&p. Toasted and buttered a half Kaiser roll. Topped with chicken salad. Served along side a bit of cranberry sauce and fresh made dressing with chunky blue cheese from Kroger. Sour cream and cheddar potato chips. Might sound weird but it was Good.

Love chicken salad, best way to eat white meat chicken! Lots of celery and pickles for me. Maybe a touch of mustard too.

Turkish chicken kebabs, grilled on the Big Green Egg. Served with raita, couscous with currants, and a chopped veggie salad with a Mediterranean-influenced vinaigrette.

Not the prettiest but very seasonal. A mushroom risotto with crimini and king oyster. And beets and leeks braised in red wine.

We enjoyed another outstanding dinner at The Farmer’s Daughter in Newton, NJ including Elk tenderloin with maple fig compote, crispy onion rings, and twice baked potatoes; crispy fish and chips with sidewinder fries and malt vinegar; scallops with butternut squash risotto; grilled octopus with sweet potato, tart apple salad, and fried capers; carpaccio; crab louie; It all went great with an excellent Chateauneuf Du Pape and cabernet.

mostly… Lang uses lard instead of veg oil as the cooking fat. this recipe removes the skin from the chicken - Lang doesnt specifiy and I keep it on. Lang just calls for a heaping tbsp of noble rose paprika - this recipe calls for a 1/4 cup, crazy much. writer fusses over the tomato, I just used some nice turkish tomato paste to sweat with the chicken. After the basic 30 min or so cooking, the chicken should be pretty much tender. The sour cream flour mixture is stirred in (yes I removed the thighs for this, it was cooked for a very brief period at low heat to finish. The attached recipe calls for 30 min more after the cream is added, which is excessive, all it needs is enough time to cook the flour and assure that the chicken is indeed done. We did not add the heavy cream at the end. garnished with nice blobs of sour cream at table, of course!

We went out for a meal this week to celebrate our 6 year anniversary! We went to Cutlery Works which is a food hall in Sheffield because we love being able to get whatever we crave without having to compromise. My partner got a pepperoni pizza that was done in a wood fired oven (the crust was fantastic).

I had a char siu bao bun made with char siu pork belly, Chinese blood sausage, a tangy, pickly ketchup and crispy seaweed. There was also Korean Fried Chicken in the original Gochujang sauce and an Asian slaw where the dressing was so good that I really did lift the bowl up and drink it… in public. Every single bite was an absolute pleasure to have.

We also shared the best salt and pepper chips either of have had.

We rounded it off with a mocha and biscoff brownie.

And a hot chocolate and brownie topped with dulce de leche, cornflakes and maple ice cream.

Let’s just say dessert killed us. I ate nothing for the rest of the day and we ate at 1 - 2 for lunch but I definitely want to go back, most likely for my birthday.

Dear friends welcomed our gang of happy eaters for a spectacular night of hot pot! So many delicious things set on the table I’m surprised it didn’t collapse under all that goodness. Several different varieties of mushrooms (oyster, king oyster, beech), various tofu iterations, noodles, bok choy, dumplings, and a ginormous plate of fantastic red snapper from our local fishmonger made for an absolute feast. There was even a lil sauce bar in the kitchen from which to mix up our dipping sauce. Yum to the max! I also didn’t lose any money bc we didn’t play any poker. Win win :upside_down_face:

Made a catering tray of pierogies for our group of volunteers at an event last night. Rendered beef kielbasa, diced onion caramelized in the beautiful fat that seeped out, garlic, smoked paprika, and a “mystery spice” that a friend brought back from Bulgaria (similar to marjoram). The pierogies were sautéed in whatever grease was left plus butter and olive oil. I did not make the pierogies from scratch, though I have in the past. These were Kasia’s from Costco.

What’s up with me waking up at 6 a.m. on a Sunday? I’ll have to deal with that tomorrow. Don’t need an extra day of it!

Dinner was easy-peasy: pork tenderloin picked up at Aldi yesterday, seasoned with olive oil and Spicewalla’s Honey and Herb seasoning rub and roasted, with Mrs. H.S. Ball’s Peach Chutney spooned on top towards the end. (Another World Market purchase, made in South Africa.)

Homemade applesauce with the 4 remaining very large Macoun apples picked up in Maine three weekends ago.

Baby potatoes tossed with olive oil and more Spicewalla’s Honey and Herb seasoning rub and roasted in the convection oven. Steamed green beans.

And wine.

Crispy roasted chicken thigh, roasted turnip and carrot tossed with a bit of butter and garam masala at the end (Spruce Eats) and creamed baby Red Russian kale. All delicious, roasted vegs the best part.
