What's for Dinner #9, 5/2016 - the "Don't Cast a Clout" edition

Hot damn Presunto…all of it…

ack! you’re killing me with those razor clams!

i really do mean to post here more regularly. lessee… since last week:

i had leftover massa de pimentao from the Portuguese party, so i made another Porco à Alentejana, sans clams for the silly BF. with super crispy fried smoked paprika potatoes. so fricken good.

then i got sick, but does that slow the food consumption down? not a titch. The BF made me (continuing in the Portuguese vein) Açorda Alentejana - garlic and water soup with bread and cilantro. incredibly soothing on the throat. and i had to laugh at the TJs codfish nugget on the side, which served as “bacalhau”!

the next night it was polenta with his tomato sauce, topped with a tiny cauli muffin with taleggio i’d made and frozen for bfasts - so odd that he’d think to do that, but it worked wonderfully. with some nice Spanish chorizo. Feed a cold…

next up were pan fried crispy chicken thighs with mexi-rice - i taught the BF how to make that rice months ago and he’s made a better and better version every time. so cuminy.

finally i got back in the kitchen, after a night out at a Medi-falafel place. i made fava bean/goat cheese/chive-stuffed chicken breasts with a pureed cauli rich with a ton of Plugra, sauteed beet greens, and a salad of radicchio, radish, apple, toasted walnuts and chives in a walnut oil/dijon/orange juice vinaigrette.

leftover favas were turned into hummas late last night and were part of the BF’s mezze dinner tonight - along with curried chicken salad, mini puris, olives, tzaziki, leftover take-out tabouli, and a tomato/goat cheese salad.

Like Maria, mezze is in my near future - but we’re going out for it to a Syrian place a few miles away.

I have to say, I love to scroll through your weekly catch-up threads. All of that lovely food! Although, it’s breakfast time here, and I just got a rumbly in my tumbly. LOL

I didn’t look at NAF on CH so don’t know but has your food game really gone into the stratosphere??? What you and y’all cook looks simply incredible.

WFD: CSF share: Hake fillets from the F/V Captain Joe out of Gloucester (Or GLAWster HAHbah if you live anywhere near there. Raises hand).

A. Red Fish Curry. Ghee; red curry paste; tinned tomatoes; a bit of water; brown sugar; zucchini chunks; firm white fish fillets in 3" pieces; green beans in halves or thirds; fish sauce. Lime juice and basil leaves tossed in at the last minute.
B. Steamed basmati rice.

Everything looks delicious, MC. More clams for you then. A pity the boyfriend slags off all seafood but if one is determined not to give it a go then it shouldn’t be forced.

Next time you could also use the masa de pimentão in Turkish food. Do look up some Turkish recipes. Quite different from Portuguese food, obviously.

Glad you dropped in, MC. Always nice when you do. One of our regulars on this thread is MIA, but I know she’ll be back when she’s ready.

Made a couple of quick photos of today’s dinner due to lack of time. Wild salmon from Faroe islands cured in grated beetroots, dill, dried juniper berries, and whishkey. Next time I will crush the berries and add more whisky. There was already a lot more whisky than most recipes call for but really, it’s almost nothing. My house still smells nice now, thanks to the fresh dill.

Ever since I first made gravad lax I never bought cured salmon again.

Steamed potatoes rubbed with butter and rolled in chopped dill. Cucumber and beetroots were quickly soak in some salt and white wine vinegar.

Before the marinade was removed

PS: sad news about one of the fledglings yesterday, due to sickness or stupidity we shall never know. Came home and found it on its side. Only 1 and a half days after leaving the nest. I buried it in a corner of the garden.

oh sad!

that salmon is stunning!

“Hardest” part is slicing. I used a Jamón knife. Removing the marinade is messy work.

Fab food, sad about the ittie bittie bird. We have a bird cemetery in a corner of our side garden under a white Spring-blooming large shrub of undetermined name that’s been in the spot since Og roamed the earth. In fact there is an assortment of wildlife and family pets interred there.

My crock pot chili (pinto & black beans, rotel, onion, yellow bell peppers, vegan chorizo by Field Roast, garlic, cumin, chili powder, salt, chipotle powder, tomato powder, ??) was good! It used up bits of this and that in the fridge in preparation of recycling week - jarred salsa and sriracha. Picked up a butane cylinder for my portable burner so was able to make rice to serve under the chili. Topped with sour cream, sliced avocado as a side. Took about 3 hours with the crock lid ajar to thicken up to my liking.

Tonight is the last of the quiche, vichyssoise and salad of mixed greens, tomatoes, pickled beets and carrot. That should clear out the perishables for my work week away from home.

Appliance guy (arrived on time!) determined that I have an electrical issue. While he was here I asked him to change the bulbs on my vent (Zephyr) since I had not been able to twist them in properly. He had a difficult time of it too so I didn’t feel like too big of a klutz. So $86 for light bulb replacement…

He glanced at my fridge (Frigidaire Gallery) and told me to leave it with the townhouse when I sell since it is a trouble child. Took the occasion to ask which brands he recommends since he deals with the problems. Whirlpool and Kitchen-aid are the most reliable appliance companies in his opinion

Electrician scheduled for next Monday. The first hour is 50% more than the 2nd so rushed to purchase replacements for my ratty exterior lights and bulbs for the deck flood light which is two stories up. Have a ceiling fan and two interior fixtures to change too. If all goes well the electrical should be completed for upgrading/selling! Then on to a new hvac system…

Out of work early for a medical appt., and then home relatively early. Slider window open due to 75° weather and bright sunshine (FINALLY!). The cats are enjoying. Easy dinner:

Romaine, spinach, radishes, shaved carrots, yellow sweet peppers, hard-boiled eggs, goat cheese and Honey-Mustard Dressing. This is the pic without the dressing, because it looks better. LOL

There was wine. The first of the last two NCIS episodes with Very Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo on the tube. Don’t know who will get smacked upside the back of the head by Gibbs after DiNozzo leaves.
