What's for Dinner #119 - the Strawberry Edition! - June 2025

Pizza Saturday. I was really happy with this pizza after last weeks disaster. Italian sausage from a local butcher. Broccoli rabe and garlic. Soft and crunchy. Cheers.

Another very Berlin day with my bestie. Sunny temps and sunshine practically demanded a leisurely stroll around Tiergarten, Berlin’s biggest central park — our Central Park, if you will

— with the goal of renting a row boat to bop around the small lake that is in midst of the park for an hour or so. Perhaps not surprisingly, many other folks had the same idea, so no row boats were available. We quickly pivoted to getting chocolate ice cream sprinkled with nuts instead cuz we flex like that

After a quick stop at home, where we rinsed off the city dust to allow for a new layer of it, we went to the Italian Food Festival taking place this weekend in a hipper nabe than hours. It was packed. Seating was non-existent, and the lines for drinks ridiculous, as for many food stands.

We lucked out, however, as a stand offering caponata with stracciatella had no line,

which made us return for a second helping, bc the caponata was very, very good (AND NONE OF THOSE DARN CARROTS!!!). We also shared a pistachio lasagna (bland, but rich) & had a lamb skewer each. They were measly, but very very flavorful. What’s not to love about grilled lamb?

Our Canuck friend and a German friend joined in the ‘fun,’ but once we had emptied our drinks we decided it was time to hit the park nearby & enjoy a sunset drink.

We made our way home around 10pm, peckish again for some snacky food & settled on serviceable pizza slices: funghi, and tuna with scallion.

Lovely, and in line with so many other pizza dinners here.

Snacky food and ice cream always sounds better than rowboats to me! Such a lovely day…but could you please send some of that summer weather to the East Coast?

Char siu made using the Woks of Life recipe. The cut of pork wasn’t the right one but it still tastes great!

Very nice!

It really was! Berlin’s such a fab city in the summer, and enjoying it with my bestie and the love of my life, well… it doesn’t get much better than that

Squid with fermented black beans and chiles over noodles, adapted from Rasa Malaysia. I used red and green chiles and doubled the sauce so I could toss with the noodles (I tossed after plating). A keeper!

Fettuccine with chicken and asparagus in a Meyer lemon-white wine cream sauce with a pinch of tarragon.

There was wine.

I picked up some Lori Anne peaches at Wegmans yesterday. They’re only there for a short time, and are SO good! Made a peach cake that was very light, but not as peachy as I had hoped. Still, it was very tasty, and I’m certainly not tossing it!

Bacon cheeseburger with home cut fries. I left the bacon fat in the skillet and added oil for the fries. Lettuce, raw onion and garden tomatoes for him.

Mrs. P made me an outstanding dinner of Debragga double cut elk chop topped, with cranberry blue cheese; steamed Dungeness crab ( courtesy of Costco); fresh grilled figs topped with gorgonzola cheese, pine nuts and balsamic glaze; TJ’s sweet potato fries, with some Oreo crusted chocolate peanut butter pie for dessert. It all went great with an espresso martini, to start, and an excellent cabernet and red blend.

Mijote https://www.mijotesf.com/ in the Mission is a restaurant deeply entrenched in French cooking. Fantastic food (creative play of ingredients, e.g. bluefin tuna and eggplant or blue cheese based ice cream for dessert) and especially the sauce are outstanding. They have a four course prix fixe (with very generous portions at a very good price) and the options to add up to three additional courses (which we couldn’t resist of course). The one area which isn’t really well worked out is their pacing, especially if you have some of the additional courses. It is understandable that they have some limitations as their main course (lamb) is cooked for many people at the same time but it is still not great if you get the courses when you still haven’t finished the previous one. Hopefully they might find a way in the future that lets the service feel less rushed
