What's For Dinner #118 - the Pollen Is Covering Everything! Edition - May 2025

Applewood and rosemary smoked lamb kebabs on the Big Green Egg. All the usual suspects: pita, raita, hummus, Greek salad, and marinated olives and feta. Good stuff.

It’s Kentucky Derby day, there was a lot of bourbon. A Mint Julep (or two, couldn’t let all that crushed ice go to waste), Bourbon glazed salmon (yes @ChristinaM , I added a squeeze of orange juice, and I licked my plate. Thank you). Asparagus sauteed in garlic butter and Aleppo pepper. Spinach, avocado, celery, red onion salad with honey mustard dressing. I didn’t have chive blossoms but the purple Magnolia is blooming and it seemed appropriate. NY cheese cake with bourbon caramel sauce and candied pecans for dessert.

In an effort to do something different with chicken, I made a Chicken & Onion white pizza for dinner. The sauce is a bechamel sauce with a little extra garlic in it. This experiment was a success!!

We had a fun time at the NJ Food and Wine Festival, at the beautiful Crystal Springs Resort, in Hamburg, NJ. We went to the Grand Tasting with some of the best NJ chefs preparing delectable bites. I couldn’t get any good pictures, since I was busy eating, and it was so crowded. I managed to get a picture of a whole boar used for a delicious ‘boarchetta’ bite. I also took pictures of some live ‘mannequins’.
Some of the outstanding dishes we enjoyed besides the wild boarchetta were:
mushroom truffle tartellete
camel mole cannoli
Meyer lemon pickled shrimp
steak tartare tostada
chicharron arancini
shrimp and scallop ceviche
lamb lasagna
malloreddus pasta with a white rabbit ragu sauce
barbacoa taco
porchetta croquetta

Merci! Currently at the SAS lounge in CPH after a 2 hour delay in EWR due to MOAR crap weather, and of course missed our connecting flight.

Got rebooked via London (!) to Berlin. Might actually make it to our apartment by tonight

I spent the afternoon at the mall yesterday in search of summer clothes. The sales are just starting so there isn’t much in the way of bargains right now although I did buy a new blouse for 40% off. I went to a nearby indie grocery store after to pick up some hummus for snacks tnis week. The store owner is Middle Eastern so they have a take away counter with all sorts of Middle Eastern specialties they make in-house including hummus. I ended up picking up stuffed grape leaves to have as an appetizer and some baklava a for dessert. So diner last night started with stuffed grape leaves then I had dal and rice then baklava for dessert.

I sometimes cover and sometimes flip, but you’re right, it’s always a delicate dance with the latter. Though if we’re being picky, I do prefer the flip
