What's For Dinner #118 - the Pollen Is Covering Everything! Edition - May 2025

We are over 65, so the recommendations for boosters are more frequent, I think, and Medicare pays for them.

Yeah, just looked it up, and it’s every 6 months for over 65 (which I am). I’ll schedule with CVS for next Friday, as I like to give myself the weekend to recover, although most recent boosters haven’t been that bad, unlike the shingles shot(s). I also saw just today that the federal policy of availability to all, regardless of age or health, will be changing in the near future.

i totally feel you on the health problems/not being able to travel. The BF has the same issues and hasn’t been able to travel with me in 3 years. I’m hopeful too… and for your H as well. I hope you three get to go!

A couple of weeks ago I noticed my car was covered in yellow dust. It’s been horribly windy here for the most part, too. I drove off, flicked the windshield wipers, and they scraped yellow. And people ask why I don’t go outside much lately…

Another sunny day, albeit it cooler and more of that insane wind (40mph) that seems to have picked up significantly… about 20 years ago

We scooted to our favorite sushi place for lunch, then hit a few shops with more or less success. Our pad doesn’t have a honing steel & I was hoping to find a cheapo one… not the Zwilling the lady at the department store tried to convince me to get. As much as it pains me, I put in an order at amazon. $14.99 is a good price :woman_shrugging:t2:

WFD was a low-key affair at home: revived our stale sourdough with a spiffy method I never knew about, and had it with an assortment of cheeses (Taleggio, Raschera, and scallion crack

fennel salami, two kinds of herring salad, and marinated zuke & eggplant.

Oh, and some of the leftover salad from last night. The herring salads were disappointing: the dill one was too salty, the beets & apple one too sweet, so I tossed them both

The brands are usually good quality, but it might be best to find a local fishmonger who makes their own.

Thanks! He is doing a lot better than 10 months ago when we lost a lot of $$ canceling a trip to Germany. At the time he was in a lot of chronic pain and could not imagine even a 2 hrs drive to the airport. Couldn’t walk or drive. A million medical visits later what has immensely helped is PT and meditation. He is doing a lot better and wants to try to do some lighter travel to see what he can manage. I feel both helpless and awful. He is barely 50 and was the picture of health and physical fitness all his life. Sometimes shit happens. If it hasn’t yet, Carpe diem.

Shrimp salad on a toasted bun, tomato/cucumber and red onion salad on the side.
Shrimps were sauteed in a bit of bacon fat and olive oil, S&P, a dash of hot sauce and some spicy grasshopper seasoning that my niece brought back from CDMX(I put that shit on everything).
Added mayo/lemon juice/moar hot sauce/the drippings from the sauteed shrimp and diced grilled onions(leftover from the other day). Bun was buttered and toasted, chopped romaine for crunch.
So tasty, I had 2 :grimacing: :pig:

Dinner tonight was stirfried pork and asparagus. A little chili oil was drizzled over top.

It’s unseasonably cool here today, low 50s and raining. Feels like November! So, I have a pot of chili simmering for dinner. No pics, because you all know what chili on a cold day looks (and feels) like! :fire::heart_hands::smiling_face:

Ooh, that looks tasty!

We’re past the yellow dust on everything…it’s prematurely hot and oppressive here on the Gulf Coast, and the rainy season hasn’t started yet. I’m absolutely miserable this week with the sneezing and drippy nose. The feels-like temp is over 100F/35C in the inland areas…thank heavens Im ok the coast where the little bit of a breeze keeps it in the 90s at least.

Relied on leftovers tonight as still feeling poorly – chicken gochujang sloppy joes on a toasted bun and cauliflower puree.

It was very tasty. And I will keep my fingers crossed and hope you get a good dousing of rain soon to wash all the pollen away.
