What's for Dinner #109 - the National Sandwich Month Edition - August 2024

Today was spent with more departure prep, including one of my favorite cleaning chores (which is kinda like picking my favorite dental procedure): power-washing our brickwalls, shutters, and the garage door. The other chore is steamcleaning our floors. Neither require much of any effort, and the progress is visible immediately. My PIC’s freaking out a bit over our impending move, but I keep reminding him that we’re not moving to a different continent. It’ll all get done in due time, and whatever we forget we can pick up when I’m back up in a few weeks. NBD

WFD was the last of the luscious lamb from our potluck, leftover baba ghanoush, melidzanosalata & a tiny bit of tzatziki.

I made a Caprese app with burrata and FM tomatoes. Easy peasy.

Soba with veggies, the last of the leftover steak (got 3 wonderful meals out of it!) and a very gingery, garlicky soy dressing. Riff on a RecipeTin Eats recipe - super tasty and very easy.

A new-to-me recipe from Recipe Tin Eats for an easy baked white fish with lemon-cream sauce.

I used a nice BC halibut filet - split across the meridian – with leeks and a lemony cream sauce. There was a side of herb-roasted, seasonal yellow squash and broc. Long grain rice for sopping up the delicious juices.

The fish was caught on a recent fishing trip off Vancouver Island. Veggies and herbs from the garden.

We have such good produce here in Portland, OR and during the summer a range of more common and specialty Chiles are available fresh. We like to do shredded pork or chicken simmered in the green chile sauce as enchiladas with excellent heritage nixtamalized tortillas from Three Sisters, topped with local cilantro, chopped fresh serranos and lime.

Chanterelle, artichoke and shrimp risotto. So good that the onion-despising mister ate it, despite its onions.

A what ever I had on hand pizza. Stonefire flat bread, marinara tomato paste sauce, a combo of comte and asiago, Italian sausage, onion, garlic, red & orange baby bells, mushrooms, Castelvetrano olives, finished with a sprinkle of parm reg, rpf and a chiffonade of basil. Salad of mixed greens, tomato, red onion, cucumber, oo&v dressing. wine.

I like it a lot! A nice slightly bitter counterpoint. Wish I had brought a slice home.

You know how to eat.

Mixed seafood–fish, shrimp, calamari, bay scallops lightly sauteed in bacon–and little tomatoes, tossed with cavatappi in an egg and romano sauce carbonara style, and a few squeezes of meyer lemon.

noodle soup with a soy marinated egg. It really hit the spot…

This is what happens when the "edit " button disappears fast… Pictured is a beef noodle soup with a soy marinated egg at my favourite Chinese restaurant. The egg is considered a side dish to be eaten with your fingers but last night it was placed in the soup. Eating a whole boiled egg with chopsticks was interesting

Steamcleaning the floors? Is that normal pre trip procedure? I’m lucky to vacuum and dust the blinds

Potluck apps at one of my choral group‘s end of summer party/rehearsal. I made a ratatouille ish dip with pita chips. Still on an eggplant kick….

It’s almost faster (and mos def more efficient) than swiffering, TBH. Plus it gets rid of deeper stains like the glue that keeps those felt thingies on the chair legs? We used to have a severely overweight poker buddy who somehow managed to, um, massage that stuff into our hardwood floors by moving around on his chair. I thought that shit would never come out, but I like a challenge. Hot steam FTW!

The power-washing was mostly for my own entertainment, and to not feel too useless — being that I am still not working.

Vacuuming and dusting the blinds is up today! We really know how to have fun at casa lingua
