She made herself a delicious pan seared shrimp salad.
Thank you. I’ve not been able to work (or sit - and I do a lot of sitting at work) comfortably for any significant length of time since late spring, but at least it’s not been this way for the entire 3 years. I’d be beside myself
But I’m still better off than so many, including a dear friend who suffers horrible migraines - sometimes for days at end, and that keeps things in perspective for me… but it def gets to you after a while.
New pizza joint in the hood serving up Roman Style pie
Had the mortadella with ricotta/pesto and pistachios + the Diavola, nduja/sausage/pickled onions and chilies
First time having Roman style pie, good stuff, great toppings but it was served only warm-ish, is that a thing?
Tonight’s dinner was bacon- wrapped gruyere stuffed dates, lamb tagine with apricots and dates, scalloped potatoes, Ina’s maple baked beans and roasted sweet potatoes.
I used French white beans instead of red kidney beans.

The last of the Xmas Pudding and the last of one fruitcake.
We had a big lunch of soup dumplings and potstickers at a local spot a couple towns over so tonight’s dinner was leftover pasta with roasted tomatoes, bread crumbs, cheese and lots of evoo.
And wine.
Dungy Crab on sale for $4.97/# (w/digital coupon). Our season still not open yet, glady settle for these while we wait for the local crabs to come in.
Two crabs exactly 4lbs for a shade under $20. Whipped up some Louie dressing, a simple salad. DW is happy.
Was just reading an article about Swan’s Oyster Depot’s “secret menu” crab back. 12 hours later, Voilà!!!
Apple Bacon Pizza tonight, thanks to @MunchkinRedux and @Phoenikia for the inspiration and recipe link. I used a 12-oz pizza dough ball from my grocery, purchased Thursday and refrigerated 2 days, for the crust and hand tossed it on my fists to stretch it into a rectangle (have always wanted to do that, but my homemade dough usually hasn’t rested enough to try). Placed on a very lightly floured cookie sheet, that went into oven as-is (no transferring to an pre-heated pan).
For that amount of crust - a cookie-sheet’s worth, I used 1.5 - 2 x the topping amounts and all the white sauce from 1 C of milk. I used dashes of dried oregano, not fresh thyme. And most of a “mystery” apple (may have been a Jazz variety - no longer had a tag.)

I was outta ground beef so I had bought 5.59 lbs. of 80/20 ground from Wegmans on Thursday and made a big-ass pot of meat sauce for my freezer, almost 4 quarts. It included 3 sweet Italian sausages squozen from their casings, plus plenty of chopped onions, red bell peppers, mushrooms, minced garlic, Rao’s marinara, Muir Glen diced tomatoes, 3 cartons of Pomi crushed tomatoes, dried herbs, s/p, and a couple of Parm-Reg rinds.
Dinner was a b/s chicken breast seasoned with olive oil, s/p, minced fresh rosemary and thyme, cooked in the convection oven for 20 minutes before pouring a “sauce” of Brooklyn Deli Mango Chutney I got at World Market mixed with some white wine to finish baking. Lightly gingery-sweet. Not bad.
Sides were steamed green beans with leftover herbed orzo.
There was wine.
I have a short video that shows what I deal with almost every time I go in to the kitchen, unless Murphy is sound asleep. But it’s too big to upload. (Sounds of his constant meowing while I’m in the kitchen stirring the sauce.) Instead, I’ll post a bookends picture of Murph and Finny this morning on my ottoman, leaving no room for my feet. Of course.
Leftover pepperoni and sausage pizza from the freezer. Salad greens in vinaigrette with marinated artichokes. There was a little fresh pineapple for dessert.
I made a big pot of chicken soup with nappa cabbage in the slow cooker. Since it was ready around dinnertime I had a bowl, adding some chow mein noodles to ramen -ize it.
Our 15+# black cat is very vocal and has a wonderful conversation each time he and the roommate go down stairs in the morning. I can’t understand a thing they’re saying to each other, but they’re okay with that. Puss and I have our own communication style; ‘out’, ‘water’ and ‘pull out the brush, please’ is all we need.
Dinner was a very small, on the bone half turkey breast that was roasted over bread stuffing, some roast potatoes, leftover sweet/sour red cabbage, peas and gravy.
We enjoyed another sensational dinner at Bistro D’Azur in West Orange, NJ, including an awesome crispy duck confit salad with cheese, candied walnuts, fresh figs, and pickled red onions; another excellent salad of Jambon wrapped around creamy Humboldt fog cheese, and more fresh figs; lobster crepe; lamb rib chops; and branzino. We also had some Spanish chips. It all went great with a couple of cabernets.
Penne alla Norma - Quickly pan-fried eggplant cooked with celery, onion and garlic in a sauce made with diced tomatoes and white wine. Finished with some diced mozzarella and dill.
Hopefully 2024 will bring good health.
That lamb chop dish is
Duck and sweet potato tacos, inspired by years of following everybody’s creative ways on these “What’s for Dinner” threads.
The leftover duck from our Christmas dinner went to good use here. Also some of the root vegetables that remain from our CSA share.
Red cabbage and carrot slaw on the side. Dressing is harissa + mayo with a squeeze of lime.
Here’s to good meals, good health, and goodness overall to you and yours in 2024!
Your dinner photos always make me want to do a restaurant tour of NJ!
Thank you I always try to do the Chefs justice, with my photos, for all of their delicious dishes.
