What's for Dinner #101 - the Holidaypalooza Edition! - December 2023

Sheet pan cod and rice packet with cilantro, coconut, and mint chutney (so, I guess in the style of Patra ni Muchchi), roasted green beans, and a tomato and radish salad. Spiced butter washed Old Monk rum cocktail for dessert. Merry Christmas Eve to those who celebrate (and happy holidays to all)!

Char sui-ish pork noodle soup. Ramen-ish broth, baby bok choy, green onion, Fresno chile, sb egg, black sesame seeds. Kimchi and pickled daikon. There was gin and water. I had a recipe but I accidently closed it out and when I went to my history to find it it had vanished into the ether so I just winged it. Tasted great.
Happy Holidays

Season’s greetings!

Wagyu tri-tip smoked with applewood on the Big Green Egg. The beef was marinated all day in a mixture of soy sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, onion, garlic, and red pepper flakes. Potato gratin with bacon bits and caramelized onions. Salad greens in vinaigrette.

For dessert there will be brandied fruit and chocolate rugelach.

Had a nice Christmas Eve with BF, mom, and a friend. Martinis and apps it was. Our friend’s baked brie in sourdough stole the show! There are no words to describe how good that was. She also brought bang-bang shrimp. I made string bean fries with horseradish aioli, roasted wings, and bruschetta with mozzarella pearls (not pictured). Mom assembled a charcuterie board and made her famous spinach balls. There was too much food. Had two other dishes planned but everyone was too stuffed.

As Germans we celebrate always 12/24 as the big day with gifts and special dinner. This year a meatloaf with ground beef, shredded cheddar, smoked paprika, cumin, crushed chili flakes and filling made from spinach, onions, garlic and ajvar, wrapped in bacon. Served with peperonata (made from green, red and yellow peppers, onion, anchovies, parsley braised for some time in its own juice) and tangy mashed potatoes (made with buttermilk)

Great idea! I’m a bit tired of the puff pastry version (though it’s delicious).

I feel like I must have asked for the recipe before, but just in case not, would she be willing to share it? They look delicious!

The roast is everything you said it would be in the other thread! Everything looks great! I hope the gathering was as festive as the food seems to be

Perfect description. 6:30 a.m. Santa presents have been unveiled. Chocolate croissant mostly demolished (but not eaten). Let the begging to eat candy all day commence!

I’m already planning what to do with the leftover ham from today’s meal.
Quick question… Would sliced black olives go well with ham in a quiche??

Especially when the PCP is incompetent and doesn’t diagnose it forever. Meanwhile, two years of pandemic pass. In the end it was a blessing, however, as she was never aware of her stage 4 cancer that had spread everywhere & was inoperable, or my own cancer diagnosis this year.

Silver linings, I guess.

Dinner was wonderful. My PIC’s yuvetsi may have been the best he’s ever made - even though he had to add some shoulder chops as we only had two shanks. We also couldn’t find kasseri anywhere, but the Santa Teresa pecorino was (clearly) a formidable substitute. The pie turned out to be a mixed fruit pie with cranberries, apples, and pears & we served it with vanilla ice cream from the local creamery.

We also “splurged” on a red I chose knowing next to nothing about it, and it was a fantastic pairing. I don’t even drink red wine usually, and I would buy this again in a shot

Merry xmas to those of you who celebrate.

@PedroPero makes a mean pork version he claims - might be a Macedonian twist

This recipe was ‘handed down’ from my mom’s ex-BF (who was Greek), and tweaked to perfection over the years by my beloved. It’s a wonderful winter dish.

It was just Mr Bean and me last night - The Sprout went to the BF’s family for the holiday. Even though we aren’t Italian I went with a pared down version of the traditional 7 fishes Xmas Eve dinner. Paella with shrimp, calamari, scungilli, striped bass and blackfish (that was out of the water for less than 36 hours).

I’m a big fan of each but not together. But a quiche with ham and some cheese is always good.
