What's for Dinner #101 - the Holidaypalooza Edition! - December 2023

UGH. Hope it gets better soon. Hot steam always helped. And a codeine cough suppressant that I could only get with an Rx. I horde that stuff!

Hah! I’m a member of a dining club that periodically arranges these battles. If you’re in NYC, I’ll invite you to sign up for the club.

Yum!! How do you make your schnitzel?

That is the only thing that works for me, too. Forget Great grandma’s plum liqueur, the real codeine is it.

My former doctor back in the early 2000s would only prescribe the smallest bottle of the codeine cough syrup. He was concerned I might get addicted. I looked at him and said “Well, the date on my last prescription of a bottle was some time in 1995. Pretty sure I’m not going to get addicted if I’ve made it last this long!” He agreed - but I still only got the smallest quantity he could prescribe. It was really the ONLY thing I could use to allow me to fall asleep at night.

Dinner at my sister’s Saturday night was salmon filets in a Greek-ish prep - fresh dill, feta, kalamatas and tomatoes. Served over romaine lettuce i charred in the broiler with olive oil, parm regg and a squeeze of lemon juice. little salad of frisee and radicchio with a sherry vinaigrette.

And a weird concoction for my dinner last night that actually worked better than it looked or than I expected. Tofu tossed in salt and cornstarch, sauteed until very crispy, then caramelized in a blend of maple syrup, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, cayenne, cumin, granulated garlic, and s&p, over more of the charred romaine with parm and walnuts, and a little bit of the BF’s leftover sticky rice. It tasted almost like a Chinese honey and walnut shrimp dish! That tofu prep is a keeper.

Looks good. Attahub!

These are on my list to try. Do you remember the price per pound?

Thanks!

No fun to feel crappy like that. Hope you’re better soon.

FWIW, I can end up hurting in fall/winter when the humidity drops too low in the house. Between 40-50 percent humidity is a comfort zone when respiratory ailments (or allergies) strike. The right humidity may help.

Codeine is one of the few things I have an allergic reaction to. It gives me a rash.

It’s available in Canada and the Netherlands without an Rx (ask me how I know). I’ve had a lingering case of chest and sinus congestion and Robitussin Maximum Strength Nighttime Cough DM, for Adults has been helping me sleep but I take way more than the recommended dose. Probably not a smart move, but I’ve been desperate.

We did pick up some OTC Advil with codeine on a recent trip to London. Did not look for cough syrup but will definitely consider it on our next trip out.

DH slow cooked onions and made a lamb curry, which we ate with rice, Angel pita bread and raita.
It was very good! Sorry for the messy plating.

Thank you. The house was at 40% yesterday and I slept with a vaporizer, which seemed to help. I appreciate the tip! Humidity is also great for lowering viral transmission. :grinning:

Thanks. I’m done with this but it is not quite done with me. A lot of folk are in the same boat right now with weird fall illnesses. We just compare notes and whine, then cough.

You’re out! J/k :joy:

Thank you. Your comment on duck fat in the freezer reminded me to put the fat I cut off before roasting into the freezer. I did save the fat that accumulated in the pan - it’s still in the fridge.
