What's for Dinner #101 - the Holidaypalooza Edition! - December 2023

The Babylon Berlin party was a blast. The ladies in particular were decked out in absolutely gorgeous vintage/fake vintage gowns – a peacock themed dress was particularly stunning, with the dudes trying in vain to compete with their paperboy hats, trimmed & waxed ‘staches, and suspenders.

After a festive cocktail hour (I had a martini and a Last Word bc of course I did :joy:) with two of my bandmates providing musical entertainment we moved into our private dining room, where we were treated to an elaborate game-entertainment experience that required some sleuthing and team work. Not usually my thang, but fun nonetheless.

The wine flowed generously, service was absolutely outstanding – especially considering that the restaurant was open for regular business & pretty busy, and the food was also quite good. My salmon came with a little mashed potatoes painted on the plate and carrots (!), my PIC’s chicken breast with mushroom spinach ragout & crispy gnocchi, all perfectly cooked.

The DJ was pretty terrible, so instead of dancing the mid-evening away I caught up with a buncha folks I hadn’t seen in a while. We hit up the gay bar for a night cap martini after festivities were done & were home before midnight.

Gonna take her easy today, and dinner may well be leftover cod curry.

After eating a hearty bowl of ramen for lunch yesterday and since I am tired of eating salads I had a tuna sandwich and some black olives on the side. Accompanied by half a glass of wine since I was too tired for any more. (!)

Damn. “pretty special” is being overly modest. THAT WAS FREAKING GREAT! What an amazing meal to share with long-time friends.

I did, spread between my basement freezer and my MIL’s chest freezer. Now it’s down to around 65. When I buy them whole I just ask the meat guy to trim fat like they normally do, but then wrap them up as the whole 7-bone roast(*). Then at home I cut most of them into 3, 4 bone sections and wrap for freezing.

Every year approaching Christmas the local chain drops the price to $7/lb (used to be $6 or even $5, long ago, but with the current regular price around $20 a pound I’m happy with $7). So I buy a lot every year when the sale is on, and don’t buy it at any other time.

So, under the circumstances of this year, I overbought during last year’s sale. But my buying was based on the in-laws being over for steaks like above, a bit over 2 pounds, about 3 times a year, so I’d make about 5 of them (1 each for me and them, the other 2 were more than enough for the other 4 so-so meat eaters). And Christmas dinner for the last 20+ years has been a full 7-bone roast, and I’d send a few pounds of that home with the in-laws.

(*) The corporate office instructs its stores to cut the bones off then tie them back on. I guess they think people can’t figure out how to cut the bones off the roast themselves? Anyway, that’s why I buy them whole. Everything out in the bins has already been mutilated, and if I’m going to have them open a new Cryovac for me, I feel like I should buy the danged thing. Plus then I can section it to my own whims.

Sorry, each steak is 2lbs.? Wow. That’s a lot of meat for one person!

Yep. I had them written down on a sort of “seating chart” according to where they were laid out on the wire racks (so I could do the salt calculation) but from memory, the lightest was 2.1 pounds, the heaviest 2 were 2.6, and the other three were 2.3-2.4. Bone and scrap/fat probably account for a bit over 1/3 pound.

You know some healthy eaters. I think the most steak I’ve had in one sitting was 10oz.

You need to visit Texas. Fort Worth, Amarillo, others. They’ll larn ya to eats some big steaks.

Some places have a “steak challenge”, where if you eat a 4 or 5 pound steak in one sitting, it’s free.

I don’t know the stats on how many (if any?) have gotten the free steak. Probably few - they add in side dishes (bread, potato, whatever) and you’d have to eat all that, too.

OTOH back to my dinner, several of the guys said they’d arrived without having eaten anything prior yesterday, and I did the same. And based on what I ate last night, I do plan to fast until tomorrow dinner. Beside the big steak, both the gravy and potatoes were really calorie dense. Tomorrow 2 of my kids will be home for dinner, so I’m going to start Chain Baker’s biga pizza dough this afternoon.

I’d be in a meat coma for a week.

Yeah, no. I love steak, but that’s too much of a good thing. I never understood the Man vs. Food type challenges, whether it’s trying to ingest ridiculous amounts of food, or dishes that clock in at a 1,000,000,000 on the Scoville scale… but I don’t look at food or dining as a sport :woman_shrugging:

Wow, that does look like a blast. Fancy in a fun way. Glad that you got to make merry with friends!

Good friends, good food, good drinks - what’s not to like?

And I honestly cannot wait to see the pics - they’d hired a photographer to capture all the awesomeness :star_struck:

And chew on the attached bone before it goes to Fido.

Bones go in the pressure cooker with any clinging meats. Then the flavorless clinging meats go in into a plastic bag labeled “Scooby Snacks”. Even though to me they’re both flavorless and nearly odorless, the dog loves them anyway.

I’m assuming you mean my kitty coaster. Which regularly gets knocked on the floor because the two little furry hellions are sitting on my coffee table looking out the slider door window when I’m not home. WHICH THEY CAN DO FROM THE FLOOR. :smirk_cat: :smirk_cat:

I embarked on a productive shopping expedition yesterday after getting my COVID vax (which had been delayed by actually contracting COVID a couple of months back, ugh).

Two stores down, I was starving, so I made dinner (also lunch) of happy hour at one of my favorite tapas places around the corner before heading back to finish at the third store

Pan con tomate with serrano ham and manchego cheese, mushroom croquetas, tortilla, and patatas bravas. Mostly excellent, but halfway through I confirmed what I already knew, which is that I had over-ordered out of rabid hunger. So I packed the rest up to finish at home.

Delivery tonight. I got components to assemble a rice bowl: scallop kabayaki, uni, and ikura. I have sake too. Very satisfying!
