What's At Your Local Farmers Market? The Bountiful Fresh Veggies, Fruits, Meats, Nuts and More Grown By Your Local Farmers [Thoughts + Pics]

Thanks @maccrogenoff ! I’ve never seen mangoes at various local farmers markets we’ve visited. Great to know that at least Wong’s is at Wednesday Santa Monica and Saturday Pasadena Farmers Markets. Thanks.

If you don’t preorder, get there early; they sell out fast.

Once my husband got to the head of the line and there were three mangoes left. The person behind him reached around him and snatched them.

No fist fight afterwards ?

No. Thankfully my husband is a peace loving guy.

@Chowseeker1999

Good tip on the “musk melons” from Weiser we got a few and they are fabulous. Fragrant and delicious.

Less successful but good were the “mango nectarines” from another vendor in samo. Tasty 7/10 maybe but no mango flavor just color. Much better peaches and nectarines out there than those.

Cheers !

I like the mango nectarines from Ken’s Top Notch Produce a lot.

Other producers mango nectarines aren’t as good in my opinion.

Thanks @maccrogenoff I’m pretty sure it was Ken’s at Santa Monica, only spot that had em. They were good. My expectation was that they would taste sorta like mango. I think that’s probably unrealistic. If not, I’ll give another shot. So many good nectarines and peaches right now to try so lots of competition. They can all be winners right

Maybe it’s a case of different strokes for different folks. I’m a fan of Ken’s Top Notch Produce… My favorite fruits that they sell are mango nectarines, Page mandarins and Kyoho grapes.

To my taste, the mango nectarines are particularly good this year.

I buy produce at the farmers market for my favorite restaurant. They’ve been buying lots of mango nectarines.

PS, Ken’s was nice enough to throw a handful of free plums into our bag too, I would return there.

Hi @chienrouge ,

Nice! So glad you got to try some of the in-season musk melons from Weiser Family Farms. Just lovely.

Finally got to try a Tenerelli peach!!! Delicious. Although I can’t say for sure that it’s def better than Regier’s or Scott’s (which is a statement more about the excellent quality of the latter two). I think the Tenerelli that we had this wk had perhaps a bit more of a perfume-y quality?

Wonderful that we have so many good peach vendors.

Hi @paranoidgarliclover ,

Yay! So glad you got to try them. I’m guessing you definitely let the Tenerelli peach ripen up on the counter before you ate it? (Just checking, haha.) (I like my peaches soft.)

And did you try Tenerelli’s yellow peaches or white peaches? Their white peaches are my favorite.

Thanks for the comparison with Regier’s or Scott’s. I’m going to have to try and find them at Brentwood and skip Hollywood one of these days.

Regier’s no longer at Brentwood. :frowning: I know they’re at the Wed SaMo one, but I think that one doesn’t work for you. Scott’s is at the Sun SaMo on Main. He used to have a ton of peaches, but people have been coming in early the last few wks and cleaning hi out of stock (argh).

Had a white one from Tenerelli and will have a yellow one today. I def let them ripen (I also like mine quite soft).

Thanks @paranoidgarliclover . Ah bummer Regier’s is no longer at Brentwood. :frowning: Yah, with work, trying to go to a farmers market on Wednesday during the day just doesn’t work, sigh.

I went to Mar Vista today. Scott and Tenerilli are both there.

Update 4:

Hollywood Farmers Market

Some more nice produce appearing during the bountiful Summer.

Roots Organic Farm

Roots Organic Farm just got in their first batch of Organic Heirloom Tomatoes!

Organic Heirloom Tomatoes:

Organic Potatoes (5 Types):

While nearby Weiser Family Farms has been our go-to for great Potatoes, we were curious how the new Roots Organic Farm’s Potatoes were, so we picked up a few.

They offer 5 varieties, and we picked up a classic Organic Gold Potato and a Purple Potato and gave it a quick Herb & Oil bake in the oven:

They were delicious! A gentle earthy, starchy quality, but soft, deeply potato-y. And they crisped up nicely in the oven.

Wong Farms

In a strange, fortuitous happening (either that, or they heard @maccrogenoff’s recommendation!), we saw that Wong Farms and their much talked about (here on Hungry Onion) farm-grown Mangoes appeared at the Hollywood Farmers Market(!). :open_mouth: (We’ve never seen Wong Farms at Hollywood, ever.)

Valencia Pride Mangoes:

We had the farmhand help us pick out one of their Valencia Pride Mangoes, and we let it sit out on the kitchen counter for a couple days to ripen up and soften a bit. Then, after peeling:

These have to be some of the sweetest, most fragrant, tropical, delicious Mangoes we’ve ever eaten (not in a dessert)! (@chienrouge @ipsedixit @paranoidgarliclover @BradFord @js76wisco and all.)

They were fantastic! Thanks for the recommendation @maccrogenoff .

Sugar Lady White Peaches:

Tenerelli’s next varietal of White Peaches for the Summer has appeared! Their famous “Sugar Lady” White Peaches. Letting them ripen for a couple days, they were bursting with juicy, sweet, fragrant Peach flavor. Definitely worth getting if you’re a Peach fan. :peach:

Arnett Farms

It’s prime stone fruit season still, and Arnett Farms shows off why they are a Stone Fruit Specialist, with at least 10+ varietals this week alone.

Checking in with their reliable farmhands, we asked what the best ones were this week. They recommended:

Geo Pride Pluots:

Which were just this beautiful, classic Pluot (Plum + Apricot) flavor combination. It was a sweet, lightly Plum flavor infused with deep Apricot notes.

One interesting note: When we asked about our favorite stone fruit of the season - Flavor King Pluots - the Arnett Farms helper mentioned that their Irvine Farmers Market booth was by far the largest in Southern California for them, easily 10 times the size of their Hollywood booth space(!), and Hollywood Farmers Market is one of the biggest in So Cal. He said Irvine would get it first, and then the other Farmers Markets. Interesting. (@js76wisco FYI)

Murray Family Farms

Murray Family Farms is probably the most impressive Cherry and Grape Farm / Specialist we’ve ever run across. While Cherry season is over (sad), Grape season is upon us, and the crazy varietals just keep rolling in.

This past week Murray Family Farms just got in one of my all-time favorite varietals for the Summer:

IFG-34 Organic Grapes:

They are a dark red, oval style of Grape, and they describe it as a combination of Concord and Muscat flavors. It tastes like an “all-natural Grape Soda” with deep Muscat aromas, a stunning sweetness and more. It is incredible! (@ipsedixit @ElsieDee @paranoidgarliclover @BradFord @chienrouge @A5KOBE @Sgee and all.)

Last Wednesday when my husband picked up our mangoes, the Wong Farms representative told him that they’ve planted pineapples. They said that the pineapples should be at the farmers’ markets in about two years. I’m very much looking forward to tasting them.

Great to hear about the mangos (and future pineapples, @maccrogenoff!). Partner is able to go to the Wed SaMo on occasion, so I’ll ask him to get one and some grapes.

Update 5:

Some noteworthy produce at the Hollywood Farmers Market.

Roots Organic Farm

Organic Heirloom Tomatoes:

Since @BradFord has been curious about the Summer Tomato season, we tried Roots Organic Farms’ latest Heirloom Tomatoes. These had a bright, sweet-tart balanced flavor. Real deep tomatoey flavor that you’d hope for. These were great for Salads and on Pasta.

So far for the Summer Tomato season, I think Yasutomi Farms’ Japanese Cherry Tomatoes are our favorites (the best balance of sweet and tart, umami, medium acid), Roots Organic Farms’ Sungold Cherry Tomatoes (the Gold colored ones) are the sweetest Tomatoes by far this season! And the Roots’ Heirloom Tomatoes next. Arnett Farms

Black Mission Figs:

It’s the 2nd wave of Summer Black Mission Fig season! Arnett Farms 2nd wave of Figs are rich and sweet, but a touch less sweet than the 1st wave that debuted at the start of Summer. Still, they are still quite tasty and great eating as is, or with Salads.

Flavor Queen Pluots:

The Flavor Queen Pluots are quite nice, a pure Plum sweetness (without any tartness), and maybe a bit of Melon flavor as well.

Flavor King Pluot:

However, our favorite stone fruit of the season has finally appeared: Arnett Farms’ Flavor King Pluots! They are a combination of a Apricot, Plum, and Cherry, and the flavor is nothing short of incredible! Complex, fragrant, stunning layers of flavors that really does taste like you’re eating Cherries, Plums and Apricots at the same time, but it’s more than that. There’s an almost layered Dessert aspect that hits your taste buds as you enjoy the ripe Flavor King Pluots. Definitely a highlight of the season. Do not miss this! (@ipsedixit @chienrouge @BradFord @paranoidgarliclover @ElsieDee @js76wisco and all.)

Not from Arnett’s but I’ve had better luck with the greenies (white interior) compared to the BMFs this season . Consistently sweeter.
